xboxoz360_icon581.png This has been a game I’ve had on the radar and the 360 Games Listing since early 2005. When it appeared on the net with some outstanding screen shots everyone was debunking as “real” photos, and saying it’ll never appear. Many claiming my facts were most certainly wrong, and I was misguided in believing such a game could appear on the 360.

Yesterday, news rose of an “Exclusive” preview of the PS3 and PC title 2 Days 2 Vegas with no mention of the words Xbox 360, thus fueling heaps of PS3 lovers who loved fanning the “Nah Nah Nah it’s OUR Exclusive Fire” . . . In fact, it was that PSU were having an “exclusive interview” with the developers and omitted the mention of the 360 in their article/announcement. That of course lead to the net ‘assuming’ the game was definitely not coming to the 360, after all, it couldn’t handle such a game in the first place.

It wasn’t as if he was misleading anyone, simply relaying the facts as he knew them at the time, it’s how some “fans” take things out of context, and fan them into a roaring fire. I find PSU a great site, and while they are primarily a Sony Playstation site, they support most platforms relatively unbiasedly unlike some who claim to be multiplatform, yet show a distinct bias towards their platform of choice.

After some confusion, PSU writer contacted Steel Moneys, and they assured the writer that yes, the game is definitely coming to the 360 . . . irrespective of the comments that have been made n the net to the contrary.

From Steel Monkeys:

php1f6tmp_2dtv_logo.jpgUpdate: We have added that 2 Days 2 Vegas will appear on the Xbox 360. We have talked with Steel Monkey and it is confirmed that the title will release on both PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as PC. More details on that on Monday.

Some Game Background

The storyline is based around you, Vinny who’s just been released from Rikers Prison after doing a nice 3 year stretch, and has thoughts of leading a nice, quite life now he has ‘done his time’ . . . However, it seems his younger brother Tony has other ideas. Vinny has just been told his younger, and rather inconsiderate brother Tony, has gotten himself into a right shit load or trouble in Vegas. Vinny has to run against the clock to get to his brothers aid, and has just 48 hours in which to get there.

Hence the title 2 Days to Vegas.

What ensues is your travels from New York to Les Vegas and the events that take place along the way. The game is full of car chases, action packed drama and plenty of gun-tooting-bad-guys. While some of the earlier shots show a rather ‘sterile’ street scape, Steel Monkeys have a new engine feature call “Garbage Generator” which will, as the name implies, generate various amounts of street rubbish and litter according to the location/s.

There’s lots of twists and turns through out the game, all of which is designed to keep you on the edge of your seats, not knowing what could happen next. Allowing the story to take place over the various cities as you travel from one side of the US to the other with a gangster style theme added in.

When you see the screen shots you’ll be asking yourself, like many others, are these real world shots or in-game screens. Steel Monkeys have assured everyone that the shots are actual screen shots, and the model generators showing the various characters are very well detailed, far more detailed than the GTA IV’s characters, which still have that ‘cartoony’ look about them when compared to the rest of the scenery around them.

If the screens are anything to go by, the car chases are going to be insane, as you’d swear that the cars shown were in fact real, but then, we all (well a lot of people) said the exact same thing about PGR3 when screens of it first appeared, and how wrong many people were when it did surface.

Enjoy the screens, and you’ll notice some recently released screens (2008) as well as the earlier ones from 2005. If you do look carefully, you can see the gaminess of the screens, some more than others, but it IS there. You just have to put down your suspision gun for a while, and accept that perhaps a small dedicated developer can in fact put out a bloody good game.

We’ll keep you posted on progress as it happens, and it’s supposed to have a late 2008 release period , which it should keep to, as it’s been in development now for close to 5 years, which is not unusual for a major game, actually, it more common that not.

Updated from news via PSU’s Justin Pinter

The new screenshots at the bottom of the media listing are from very early builds, and you can see some anti alising issues and lighting etc, this of course is just a 50% complete build. As we all know, the hard work on polish gets done in the last few months, if not the last crunch-month leading up to going Gold. The screens need work in such areas as ambient lighting, anti aliasing,

So don’t judge the screens too harshly, but even so, they do look bloody amazing, and will definitely be giving GTA IV a huge run for the finish line. But the game I believe is not like GTA IV insofar that it’s not a complete sandbox style “Gangstar” game from go to whoa. It seem sthat it will have a back bone and emotional complexities, rather than the “do as you please style” that the GTA Franchise seems to run off.

Which personally I do not like, and this game strikes an accord with me for some reason. It did the day I saw it back in early 2005 when compiling the Xbox 360 Up-Coming Games Listing for the Xbox.com.au site.

The game will ship for both Xbox360 and PC around Christmas, with the PS3 version shipping probably ? in the first quarter of 2009. Reason being, as the Steel Monkeys managing director Tim Dvoskin said “Resources,” . . . “We are too small to tackle everything at once.”

Thanks to PSU for bringing the game out of the mothballs and back into the limelight, it’s been too long sitting behind closed doors. Thanks Justin . . .

XboxOZ360′s prediction: -

A blockbuster and sleeper title.

  1. Just like it runs PGR3 and PGR4, Gears Of War etc. . When PGR3 screens first hit the press, they looked just the same as these in here did. as did their follow up game PGR4 . . many saying that no way could those screens be in-game or that the box could never deal with that amount of detail, as well as deal with vast textures, moving vehicle, and debris etc . . . and then they added rain to the mix in PGR4, and still delivered the goods.

We seem to forget way too quickly the merits of other games as new ones appear. The buzz on the net was that Bizarre could not fit everything they wanted to fit on a standard DVD9 it flew around the net like a bird virus, yet there they are delivering every bit of detail, and still have room for more . . .

And MS aren’t likely to just roll over and die, they have another xbox well into development, which may well hit the stands late in 2009 or early 2010, as I predicted a few years ago. Yet all games will still play on it, as they do on current This-Gen consoles.

Many developers have been working with DVD9 now for years, and they are fitting more and more onto them now than ever before due to new techniques. Such as Mega-texturing which use up about 1/4 of the space on the disc that normal textures, so they can in fact add more content than before. Do a google for Mega texturing in games see what you find.

  2. This game looks crazy, how would the 360 run something as advanced graphically as that??

  3. Interesting…I hadn’t heard much about this one. Why oh why New York AGAIN!!! If you look it up on Wikipedia you can see that New York is the location where games have most been set. Now all of a sudden Las Vegas is also climbing the ladder in this category. Arghhhh. Oh well Las Vegas does have some diversity of ‘themed’ locations if they go beyond the casino floors and glitzy strip. There are so many fantastic locations in the world, why must these be so prominent?? Even if you are going to go US location (as seems to be too often the case), why not Seattle or San Francisco? Okay rant over.

    Anyway…looks promising.

  4. One of my major pet-peevs is the so-called Exclusive word thrown around, and the flame-wars that ensue from that. And the amount of dribble that comes from people about how this platform won’t be able to do this, or that that platform should never be ‘allowed’ to have it in the first place . . . etc etc etc . . Drives me nuts .

But, as the guy from PSU stated, he NEVER said it was ONLY a PS3 and PC title . . . just that he had an exclusive interview (today some time) with the developers about the title, discussing the PS3 and PC aspects of the game, and as HE pointed out, the title on the official website has always been, and still is listed as a PC only title atm . . .

So where the hell some people get the notion it (and other games) are all of a sudden Exclusive” is beyond me. I think it comes down to the fact not many, if any people actually READ past the first two lines of text on any article . .

There’s several other titles that have been sitting back percolating in the background, and they’ll make themselves known in due course. 2 Days 2 Vegas is definitely going to have the GTA IV party-faithful up in arms . . but the thing is, this is less of a sandbox affair, and more story-driven . . which I thick will be a pleasant change . . .

  5. Oh the memories, back when Xbox360 was the next generation and that big black controller was the norm. This game was what Next-Gen was all about. But it’s so strange that it never appeared, even years after the 360 launched.

And now, here it is. Even as a big batch of eye-candy, this is definately one to look out for. :D Nice find Oz
