Who says we always get inflated prices from the US? The HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 has just received a price drop from US$179.99 to US$129.99. Surprisingly, for Australia this does not mean AU$180-200 like most companies would charge, this price is now only AU$129.99 as well! That is cheaper than the US price and even includes tax, which the US price excludes.
What about the free movies?
The HD DVD package includes Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” and a Xbox 360 HD DVD remote control as standard, however in the US you are also eligible for a choice of 5 free movies from a range available via redemption from http://assets.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/hddvd/Xbox360_HDDVDOffer.pdf.
Unfortunately, this offer is currently NOT available in Australia and makes the offer slightly less appealing for customers in Australia.
Best deal so far?
Amazon are now selling these drives online for only US$80 (ed: please check delivery availability from Amazon to Australia before ordering, as some goods are excluded from Australia – you’ve been warned) and that included 5 free movie offer, so if you are willing to import and wait (they are currently out of stock), then you can grab a really good bargain to get yourself into next gen dvds.
Is it the right format to support?
That is a debatable question, but with the low entry price now, you wont really lose much if HD DVD does not win. But at least you can watch movies like Transformers right now and who knows; we might yet still end up with a dual format or HD DVD win yet. Until then, enjoy the movies in High definition.

After getting a HD TV for my Birthday recently I am really looking at getting into the High Def market and this seems like a great way to do it. Though with HD-DVD on the way out (it seems) I just dont know.
Has this price drop been seen at retail yet?
price drop started today I believe man!
but, If I was to pick between both at the moment, I think I would be leaning towards a PS3 for Blu Ray. But I have both formats so im happy!
