Mad Max doesn't take place in a post-nuclear war world. It is about peak oil, the point at which oil extraction can no longer keep up with demand (since oil is a finite resource). The premise is that society does not consider the huge costs of building infrastructure for renewable energy until it is too late and society breaks down as a result. In the second film it is explained that nuclear war is triggered as a desperate attempt to secure the remaining reserves of oil, but this only hastens the collapse as war machines (tanks, airplanes) require huge amounts of oil to operate themselves. It's a pretty realistic scenario and one that is still just as relevant today as when the script was first written.. has anyone noticed that gasoline has gone from less than 1 dollar per gallon to more than 4 dollars per gallon in the last 8 years? The Mad Max scenario is looking more and more likely.
