Far Cry 2 Map Editor: for Xbox 360, PC and PS3

Without a doubt one of the best map editors

And yes, it’s for the Consoles as well as the PC

Far Cry 2 is probably one of the most anticipated First Person Shooters coming our way this season. I know it is on the very top of my “Must Have List”. Many have criticized it and many may well be somewhat disappointed by it.

Not so much from the visual aspects or dynamic nature of the game, but from the slant the developers have taken with this iteration. No more deadly walking half-human creatures. Not Night Vision and super leaping powers, or catlike senses. No, just you and other human beings.

This time your enemy is human, a chap that goes by the name of “the Jackal”. One great viral site that has been gaining attention for a few months now is War Unlimited which was started up by a very dedicated blogger. But with a twist. To most people the site resembles a real world experience some poor jurno is having in Africa as he attempts to cover the political upheaval there.

Surrounded by mercanaries and in constant danger. The site has real world pictures and a daily diary of events as if it were happening right that very minute. Now that is dedication for you. Somone who has created a site that basicaly has you believe it is real, but is a viral site for a game.

Here’s his last entry on the blog:

Johannesburg, S.A.

“Our Bureau Chief Darren took us out for a magnificent dinner last night. The Russia House is one of, if not the, best restaurants in Joburg. The occasion was our trip to Port Selao the next day. It was a last supper of sorts though no one articulated that in so many words. My new teammates Michael Watso and Peter Atowabene came with their girlfriends. Darren brought his lovely wife, Claire. Mikela joined me of course. She could barely contain her excitement. The Russia House is a place we’ve always wanted to visit. Even better to visit on someone else’s tab.” (finishes here – do read it)

You only have to spend a few minutes at the site and you will start thinking that you’re in the wrong place.

This game has the potential to be an experience many console gamers have never had before. One of the newest videos released by Ubisoft today is their in game Map Creator. Do your self a huge favour and check it out and see just how easy it is to create such lush or barren landscapes.

There are a few more months before the game hits shelves and there will no doubt be a rush of footage before it does. I’m only hoping it does NOT have a Demo released, so they can stay focused on simply finishing the game, and polishing it ti the highest degree possible.

  1. They have seriously cut their own throats not making a SP map editor.
They just limited their replayability in half (Providing they can get their game up and running on about 75 % of the PC market) if not, that adds another 25 percent to the market share they have abandoned.
    Nice Going as usual UbiSuck.

    • That is one of the Q/’s I asked the developer when we interviewed him here in Aust. And I have to tell you, I was initially disappointed about no SP map editor. But after discussing it with him, I can see why they didn’t.

The sheer AI requirements with the environs would struggle so much to give ypu a flowing experience if you wanted any half decent AI components. WHen asked if there would be one in Far Cry 3, they didn’t say no, or yes. But did say the hardware by then will have advanced and that also will allow greater flexability. (no, not talking x720 or PS4) . .Just talking on refinements of CPU and GPU’s for both major consoles.

By the time Far Cry 3 comes out, the 360 will have the unified cpu/gpu fitted, which will be the forerunner for the x720.

I wouldn’t diss Uni mate, they do produce and develop some amazing games, and if you actually saw the work and effort they put into each title, you sit and humbly say sorry.

WAY too many gamers diss developers these days will little knowledge of what actually takes place for 3-5 yrs of a games life cycle.

  2. Hmmm, okay.

I would have loved it to be for SP as well but I guess you can’t have everything dammit !

  3. Yeah maps are for online multiplayer. Not singleplayer. IGN confirmed it in a recent preview from memory.

  4. I haven’t heard anything about whether or not you can use the map editor for SP mode or if you can include bpts etc in the maps. One would hope so, considering the advances we have made in game technology in the last few years.

Making these things for just MP use is actually cutting a developers end user down considerably. As many gamers would like to set up maps like this and engage in decent battles with NPC’s as they normally would in SP mode.

There are several Dev diaries available, I’ll see if I can grab them and place them on a Video Page for ppl to check out. Which usually give a reasonable indication of where they are heading with a game.

One thing that I am sure of though, is that many will go into this game expecting something completely different to what they will get. I do believe the change away from the earlier iterations of genetically enhanced super humans and bad guys/monsters is a good move.

One that opens up a huge new world of possibilities.

  5. Wow, that was an impressive video.

I have to admit I played the demo of the original Far Cry and didn’t like it so never played the game.

Anyone know how the map editor will be integrated into the game? i.e Can you make maps for online multiplayer or will you be restricted to who can play them.

    Any word on bots?
