In type Sydney irractic weather of late, sunny one minute, pouring rain the next, followed by gail-forced winds, then solid 30 degree heat and humidity. Who said the end of the world is not upon us, it certainly feels like it . . . With 5 members of our team and the 2 guys from OzBoxLive (Melbournite’s) set out to view what Ubisoft were presenting to the gaming media in Australia.
Using the beautiful Paddington Town Hall’s Indie Chauvel Cinema as their playground, Ubisoft set the theme with Prince Of Persia, End War and Far Cry2 posters and artwork adorning the walls and bar area in the old, with an Open-bar for those present making everyone welcome for the few hours we would be there.
Representatives from all sites and magazines in Australia and even a contingent from New Zealand were present to make sure our region was well informed about the new titles heading our way.
We were there all doing the usual met-chat of course. Tell fibs olut of school, gossip and hand-me-down jokes, and boste each other high view score (jk btw). It is sort of the industries equivalent of a Corporate Bonding Day. Our site was invited to come along and check out as yet unseen footage of the above titles, as well as have 4 excellent designers from the various games showing off the different and unique features of the upcoming games.
The early Ubisoft trailer of course chowed several games that will be fronting in’09, such as HAWX, I Am Alive, (the two I’m especially keen on), plus the footage of the three games up for showing today. We will be having some excellent one-on-one interviews with the developers tomorrow and bringing you their views on the huge array of investigative questions we will be putting to them.
From the small demo’s we saw today, one game really shines, and will have many gamers sitting up and taking notice. Several of the team were very noncommittal about the title Far Cry 2. Until of course they saw it first hand up-close-and-personal.
What really sold then was the Map Editor and it’s dynamic use of terrain brushes and construction on an entire map. Maps that would have only been thought of PC only. We’ll be putting some interesting questions to them, one of which will be how they are finding working on the consoles now, especially with their some-what limited memory.
Many PC gamers or supporters say that great games can not be made to the level of realistic attention to detail on console as they can on PC gaming rigs. Today’s demonstration proved that completely wrong. More on that in the next few days.
Tomorrow we have interviews with Ubisoft, then a media event with Cliff Bleszenski and a unique view of the finish code of Gears Of War 2 later on in the day. Followed by an evening of fun-n-games at the IGN Black Beta with Cliff and Gears 2 again in a non-business evening where business is put aside and general fun is the main aim.
