Update: Check out the GRAW Ghost Enlistment with Major Mitchell at the bottom of this article.
With some companies feeling the pinch rather heavily, there are others such as Ubisoft, while still showing actual financial losses last quarter, are still in business and making strong headway due to continued investor support.
Ubisoft recently acquired Massive Entertainment, the developers behind the acclaimed World In Conflict Series, and Massive could go to no better home I might add.. So it came as no surprise today to find out Massive Entertainment will in fact be making a new brand MMO for Ubisoft, their new parent company.
The President and CEO of Ubisoft Montreal Yves Guillemot made this statement recently at the 16th Annual BMO Capitol Markets Interactive Entertainment conference only this morning (14th November 2008)
“We just bought it from them since those guys have Blizzard so they didn’t need that studio as much as we do, and those guys are extremely strong in RTS (real-time strategy), so they are going to help us also get closer to the MMO space. Our goal there is to go first with light MMOs…that have been extremely popular in China but are also coming in the U.S. and Europe and are generating lots of good revenue, so our goal is first to start with light MMOs, and then in the future also come with RPG and RTS, also in the MMO space.”
From what I’ve heard from within Ubisoft, there’s more lurking about in the corridors of the company, so make sure you keep your ears and eyes open for some amazing announcements from Ubisoft very shortly.
My “OXCGN Predictions” for 2009 will be
• 1) An announcement of the highly anticipated GRAW’s (GRAW 3) next iteration as a stand alone title
• 2) A brand new Rainbow Six Series, one that is NOT connected to Vegas, as that one is dead and closed.
• 3) Plus the likelihood of an as yet “un-named IP” being kicked around the developement studios within the Ubisoft World.
This ‘could’ be the new MMO, it could be a New Tom Clancy Series we have yet to experience. We just don’t know. But we can rest assured that any MMO coming out of a combination of Ubisoft and Massive Entertaiment is going to be not just good, but most likely “Great” . . .
Ghosts – You’re needed NOW!
Ubisoft are also tying in their GHOST Recon teams in with their latest Tom Clancy iteration, EndWar, asking for Ghost Teams to enlist now. . .so do check it out and signup now with Major Mitchell.

And why not be happy they are moving across to consoles.
Consoles are no longer thought of as the PC’s poor cousin. In fact, many developers are now building for the console as the prime platform, then adapting the PC version, al be it much better in many regards, but that’s a given considering the power many PC gaming rigs have.
But their aim is to broaden their user-base,not cater for a smaller market share that is reducing each year. One only has to look at the numbers sold per platform to see the sales do not warrant spending millions on pone title if it only has one platform to be sold on.
It therefore NEEDS to be workable on all platforms for it to be successful, which many RTS and MMO developers are now embrassing, and more power to them I say.
I’m happy for that reason myself, but also because their games aren’t bad! I also wonder if an RTS dev can make a good MMO, though! I’m not a big fan of MMOs myself.
Why would a RTS dev necessarily be able to make a great MMO? You’re only happy because its likely coming to consoles…
