The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

This summer, LucasArts will release The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition via Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360 and for PCs.

Back by popular demand, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition faithfully re-imagines the internationally-acclaimed classic game (originally released in 1990) for original and new audiences alike. The development team at LucasArts is bringing the game into the modern era with all-new HD graphics, a re-mastered musical score, full voiceover, and an in-depth hint system has been added to help players through the game’s side-splitting puzzles. Purists will also delight in the ability to seamlessly switch between the updated HD graphics and the original’s classic look.

For those that don’t know, in Monkey Island we play a man named Guybrush Threepwood through his adventures defeating the evil ghost pirate Le’Chuck who is in love with Guybrush’s girlfriend, Elaine. Yep, its your basic Love Triangle scenario.

As in many games, somehow his journey gets muddled, with lots of funny, unique characters who will provide the player many great laughs. One of the game’s strengths is getting Guybrush to solve many puzzles using items he finds during his travels.

This is not the first time a very old classic game has been remade and brought to XBLA with great success. Our favourite Persian Prince made his way to XBLA with his original classic game, which was very successful at the time. I hope that The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition performs just as well, and hopefully gives the developers encouragement to port the rest of the fantastic series to Xbox Live Arcade.

This also marks a very good moment in gaming, because by finally porting an old classic Point and Click adventure title to XBLA, this should hopefully open the flood gates to other developers so that even more of those classic Point and Click games can be experienced by all once again in this generation of gaming.  Have a look at our Top 5 Point and Click Games for XBLA article for a list of what we think should make its way to XBLA.
