You’ve all seen the wiimote hack on youtube right? The one where the guy straps the sensor bar to his head to track his movements so the perspective on screen shifts to give the viewer a 100% 3D view like staring through a window. Now it looks like the 360 could be getting it.

You really do NEED to watch this to get a full perspective of the “possibilities” that could be had with Project Natal.

• Johnny Chung Lee’s amazing video showing head tracking VR display

With the ‘Project Natal’ unveiled yesterday in the Microsoft Keynote, there’s now an incredibly accurate way to track movements in 3D space, so it’s only a matter of time until this virtualisation of creating a 3D image is in all future 360 games, no glasses or special screen needed.

Of course it’s hard to explain how the effect works without watching the wiimote hack video, but basically the image on the screen pans left, right up and down based on the player’s position in relation to the screen, and shifts the camera in and out from the player’s distance to the screen. The result: a 3D image even better than in 3D cinemas, flawless and causing absolutely no headaches. It doesn’t even require any more processing power.

• The possibilities with Project Natal are endless

The potential for this is limitless – in an FPS, you could literally lean across to see around what was on the edge of the screen. In racing games you would get a much better sense of depth perception for how far ahead corners and ccars are.

These games do not even need to be using motion control – the traditional 360 pad for games that need it, but Natal working in the background to keep track of the player’s position in relation to the screen to provide unparalleled realism. And yes, of course this could work with real Natal games too as you move forward and backward so the image shifts in and out.

Natal is a breakthrough for game control, and I’m sure over the coming months developers will be finding more and more creative ways to use it like this example.

We can only watch, wait and anticipate.
