Forza 3 Update 30th September #12
OXCGN Forza 3 Update #12 – Daily Vehicle News
Presenting #008 Aston Martin DBR9
As promised, we are bringing you the daily vehicles from Forza 3, but with a twist. We’ll be bringing you the news behind the cars in much more detail than the boys at Turn 10 can afford to do on a daily basis.
We intend to fill you in with what makes these cars different, how they have been used, and what makes them unique in the racing world. Their origins and history are part of racing, and racing is after all what Forza 3 is all about.
The Aston Martin has long been the symbol for superstars, and one of those of course is James Bond. Being a movie star in its own right, the Aston Martin has made an impression wherever it has appeared, be that on the silver screen, on the road, or race tarmac around the world.
And little wonder, especially with its ground trembling grunt and power that can have many other supercars in its class trembling in their collective boots.
In Forza 3 we’ll see the Bell Motorsports present their R2 Class #008 Aston Martin DBR9 for our enjoyment.
Not a car to be played with lightly either, as off the block it has a R2 826 PI rating, so you’ll be needing to treat this puppy with kid-gloves, and try and lead it around the circuit, rather than you having to try and catch its tail as it tries and break free from your grasps, which it will do.
So be gentle, but firm at the same time with this beast.
Most gamers when faced with the twitchiness of the full on Aston Martin DB9 Race cars in previous games seem to think that it’s the game at fault. Truth is, it’s more about the pure nature of the car its self, rather than a poor developers approach to correctly representing the vehicle in question.
Aston Martin became a name to recon with when it first debuted in the 1948 and won the 1959 Le Mans World Sportscar Championship in the first ever DBR1. The current DB9 owes its bread and linage to that original DBR racing car which set records as far back as the late 40′s and 50′s, and still continues to do so today.
These cars are actually based on real world vehicles, vehicles that only the very “affluent” and discerning of buyers can afford. Not your everyday Aston Martin either, the DB9′s are a special breed, one that only select numbers dare buy and drive, or should I say “ride”.
It was in 2005 that the then DB9 discarded its somewhat lackluster 007 history and dropped the 008 on the racing world like the proverbial “ton of bricks”. This saw it first across the line in the 12 hr Sebring enduro, then even better, it had back-to-back wins in the GT1 Class at Le mans in 2007 and in 2008.
The Bell Motorsports #008 was one of the cars that helped put Aston Martin back on the map in sports car racing, campaigning in the American Le Mans series in 2008.
You won’t find much steel in these puppies, with 90% of the vehicles carcass made from carbon fibre, with the only bits of metal being the Alloy roof all of which is wrapped around a huge rollcage system designed to withsatnd impacts of in excess of 200 mph.
Equipped with the huge 6ltr V12 that pumps out a solid 620 BHP, the engine provides jet like thrust that enables it to take on one of its arched rivals, the L6 Corvette.
These coupes just ozze sleekness, power and brute power. Power that you will have to learn to master, as racing means learning to work ‘with’ your ride, not the other way round.
If you want to get the best out of your Forza Motorsports 3 R2 Class DBR9, it will have to be done gently, and try slowly chipping away at lap times, rather than using its brute force to win outright.
All you’ll end up with is a car in the wall, and many other drivers really pissed off at you for your trouble. It’s a beast, pure and simple, treat it like you love it, or it’ll bite you in the arse as fast as look at you.
A brethren of the DBR9 is the DBRS9, which is the vehicles built specifically for the FIA GT Championship, and runs at races such as 24 Hours of Le Mans, the DBRS9 is intended to be raced by racing teams participating in FIA GT3 class and some national and international GT2/GT3/GT4/GTC series, like FIA GT3 European Championship, British GT Championship, International GT Open, Australian GT Championship, ADAC GT Masters, Belgian GT Championship, Italian GT Championship, French GT Championship, Speed World Challenge, as well as owners who have a great deal of cash handy, and simply wish to use it for their own personal ‘track days out’ with the family.
The DB9 has been adapted for use in sports car racing by Prodrive. Initially the DBR9 was launched prior to the 2005 season, running in the ACO and FIA’s GT1 class. It retains the DB9′s six litre V12 engine, but has been extensively modified to decrease its weight as well as to improve performance. The DBR9 won in its debut at the 2005 12 Hours of Sebring, and has gone on to take wins in the American Le Mans Series, Le Mans Series, FIA GT Championship, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
