OXCGN Forza 3 October Update #10 – Classic American Muscle 1979 Z28 Camaro Rocks-N-Rolls

I can remember sitting my backside in one of these beauties . .the seats are no-fuss slimline things, unlike the lovely ex-lounge chairs modern day cars call seats. And racing these things ment making sure the whole things stayed in one line.

Not the most powerfullest cars in standard trim by any means, with just a tad over 175 BHP coming out at the rear wheels. An enthusiast however, can spin them out to incredible amounts of horsepower. But we need to remember that these were the days of loud V8’s, tyre smoke and Cannon Ball Runs. These lovelies just fitted straight in.

So much so, that sales in the first year tipped 282,582, which is a sizable number of specific model vehicles for their time. Of that number, there were only 84,877 that were turned out as Z28’s, making them somewhat of a real rarity, rather than just another car run off the production lot.

A somewhat funny look high perched nose, completely different to modern standards greated you as they approached. But you could hear them coming from a mile away.

The Z28’s were all trimmed out in the ‘classic’ two-tone GT strip styles that were becoming so popular at that item. They became its signature colour code, and purists wouldn’t have it any other way. Some considering it blasphemous if you dared turn a real Z28 into a single toned unit . . .

The Z28 was fitted out with a whopping LM-1 350 Cu-in V8, and while it only churned out rather low horsepower, the torque was twisting in at 270 lbs-ft. Which is sizable when you consider the low horsepower.

Showing than not all high horsepower cars have good grunt. The Z28 could use that torque well, and was a staple ride for many a race driver in the US.

Most were fitted with 4 slots or Turbo Hydo 350/400 Automatics. The Turbo 400’s were/are one of the most respected modifers auto-trans on the market, and often sit behind many huge horsepower rigs, so it was right at home in the Z28.

Forza 3 fans will grab these and keep their classic lines and colours and have at least one bone stock Z28 in their garage. Well, I know I will, but I’ll also grab one and trick it out with some typical Custom Paint work suitable for the times.

These great rides also saw their fair share of fun on the quarter mile, as the high nose attitude lent its self to power on the rear wheels realy quickly, doing away with spring windup common in a lot of lower cars that lifted the front before delivering the full power to the rear wheels.

Modern Street Machiners still love the classic lines of the early Camaros, and the early 70’s were and still are some of the most sought after models for the Car-Tinkerer, Which Forza 3 will bring out in all of us, hopefully.

Treat these babies with the respect they deserve, remembering that they are true classics and need to be given the accolades they so richly deserve and have gained over the years.
