And The Winner Is…..
© 2009 Arthur Kotsopoulos and David Hilton
2009 has basically come and gone and this year saw OXCGN.com go places which we never thought we would go in such a short time as a Community Xbox Website. We’ve ranked as low as 60k on the global Alexa ranking system, though we have leveled off at 120k, and pulled off a Google Page Rank of 3/10, both of which are huge tasks for any indie game site, especially one that is just over 2 years old.
2009 saw OXCGN attend E3 ’09 in L.A., various THQ, Ubisoft, Rockstar, Microsoft and other events all around Sydney and getting to play and see a plethora of new games from the PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, PSP, Wii and of course the iPhone.
Over the past week fellow writers have discussed possibilities for OXCGN Game Of The Year and as well as announcing our final choices for GOTY and Runner Up, a few of the staff have given their personal Top 10 list of GOTY contenders. We have also offered readers a chance to vote on their own personal favourite here.
OXCGN’s GOTY was chosen based on where staff placed certain titles as their Number #1 choice and Runner Up as their 2nd and included all gaming platforms.
So without further ado let us take a look at OXCGN’s Overall Game Of The Year for 2009 as well as look at staff members’ Top 10 GOTY lists for 2009.
OXCGN’s Overall Game Of The Year:
ASSASSIN’S CREED 2 (360/PS3)
While conspiracy theorists from a certain other console will no doubt say we chose this because it was also on the 360, the truth is that we held an open and honest staff discussion with all games from all platforms considered and the clear winner was Assassin’s Creed 2.
AC2 has taken all that was fantastic about the original and fixed most of the negative issues to present a gaming experience that gives the gamer an open-world full of choice, while still following a focused narrative full of betrayals, conspiracies, and conflict.
It has an inspired historical setting, an amazing atmosphere for each real-world location that changes with time of day (or night), and this time has a huge diversity in gameplay from using courtesans or money to distract guards, to free-running after pickpockets, to assassinating enemies from haystacks or ledges, to RPG-like elements like upgrading weapons, clothes, and even making money from shops in your villa.
This game is something special that appeals to a variety of game players and deserves the Game Of The Year title and we can’t wait to see what Assassin’s Creed 3 brings and where and when it will be set.
RUNNER UP:
UNCHARTED 2 (PS3)
This amazing PS3 exclusive has a tight story with excellent voice acting and humour and lots of action, while taking the gamer on a journey through a great diversity of visually spectacular environments. The game has great pacing, with areas that involved jumping, climbing and swinging, areas involving puzzles, areas with lots of shooting action, and some fighting from vehicles like trucks and trains. Like AC2 there was an amazing level of detail (I still love the footprints in the realistic snow).
While Uncharted 2 was many people’s Game Of The Year (including so far our readers on our GOTY poll) it was a primarily linear experience where AC2 offered more choice in mission, open environments, as well as the primary path which was also satisfying (though its dialogue was not as well written as in Uncharted 2). Uncharted 2 was an extremely enjoyable action Indiana Jones-like romp that all gamers should have been able to enjoy but lacked the layers of gameplay that AC2 provided.
AC2 had to deal with complex game dynamics like crowd interaction and open-world climbing everywhere in-game while Uncharted 2 had few NPCs to worry about and only limited vertical pathways on the environment. On the other hand, Uncharted 2 has multiplayer and an amazing rendering of distant vistas.
While some still complain about AC2′s fighting style, Uncharted 2′s fairly loose controls and camera in some places were not always helpful. Still, a very close second.
OXCGN.com Top 10 GOTY Lists:
Shadow Wave’s GOTY List:
- Uncharted 2 (PS3)
- Resident Evil 5 (360/ PS3/ PC)
- Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (360/iPhone/PC)
- Assassins Creed 2 (360/PC/PS3)
- Batman: Arkham Asylum (360/PC/PS3)
- Brutal Legend (360/PS3)
- Forza Motorsport 3 (360)
- Halo 3: ODST (360)
- Shadow Complex (360)
- Modern Warfare 2 (360/PS3/PC)
As you can see Shadow Wave, who is an avid multiplatform gamer, has a Top 10 GOTY list of titles that range from multi-platform, to console exclusive and iPhone. His list includes Sony’s dominating Uncharted 2, Infinity Ward’s controversial Modern Warfare 2 and Tim Schafer’s brilliant envisioned Brutal Legend.
There’s no denying some titles on there as expected GOTY material, but certain titles ranking over some of the bigger ones shows that no matter how much hype is behind a certain game it doesn’t mean that everyone will see it the same way. A good XBLA game in a different genre can be more enjoyable than a AAA high cost production.
GrathiusXR’s GOTY List:
- Assassins Creed 2 (360/PS3)
- Batman Arkham: Asylum (360)
- Borderlands (360/PS3)
- Red Faction: Guerrilla (360/PS3)
- Halo 3: ODST (360)
- Forza Motorsport 3 (360)
- Modern Warfare 2 (360/PS3/PC)
- Shadow Complex (360)
- Plants vs Zombies (PC)
- Left 4 Dead 2 (360/PC)
GrathiusXR has the disadvantage of not having access to his brother’s PS3 so his Top 10 GOTY features mainly 360 based games but also a few multiplatforms and PC based titles. It’s interesting to see that his list, as compared to Shadow Wave’s, ranks certain titles higher and also has different ones such as THQ’s “thank god” sequel, and 3rd in the franchise, Red Faction: Guerrilla.
It featured such a destructible environment that was not only fun but made the long wait for the end of year rush all the more sweeter. This Top 10 shows what titles he thought brought something extra to their genre and were at the same time enjoyable and worth purchasing.
TWODOGSz’s GOTY List:
- Assassins Creed 2 (360/PS3)
- Uncharted 2 (PS3)
- Plants vs Zombies (PC)
- Forza Motorsport 3 (360)
- Borderlands (360/PS3)
- The Beatles: Rock Band (360/PS3)
- Batman: Arkham Asylum (360/PS3)
- Dragon Age: Origins (PC)
- Shadow Complex (360)
- DJ Hero (360/PS3)
TWODOGSz has a list that ranks games which offered him a unique experience over those that impressed him for a few hours and which he never touched again. Noticeable is the PC title Plants vs Zombies, which once released he never stopped talking about. I mean seriously, Plants vs Zombies- you can’t get more simple than that.
Also features is The Beatles: Rock Band which he first saw at E3’09. Yes, he is a fan of the Beatles, but that made the game that much sweeter to play come release. He has also included an XBLA game, Shadow Complex, which really pushed how involved and visual a ‘simple’ Arcade title can be.
Sutton Dagger’s GOTY List:
- Assassins Creed 2 (360/PS3)
- Uncharted 2 (PS3)
- Borderlands (360/PS3/PC)
- Killzone 2 (PS3)
- Banjo Tooie (XBLA)
- Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
- New Super Mario Bros. (Wii)
- Halo 3: ODST (360)
- Left 4 Dead 2 (360)
- Tales of Vesperia (360)
Next up is Sutton Dagger who has a GOTY list which represents that certain style of game that he loves to sit back and relax with.
Some good old JRPG’s like Tales of Vesperia and Valkyria Chronicles as well as a classic in the Banjo-Tooie title, which saw itself come back to life on XBLA this year, feature in his list.
With a nice updated HD experience, Banjo brought back some good memories for Sutton back when the N64 housed some of the greatest games to ever have graced our lounge rooms.
AXIS of Reality GOTY List:
- Assassin’s Creed 2 (360/PS3)
- Uncharted 2 (PS3)
- Batman: Arkham Asylum (360/PS3/PC)
- Modern Warfare 2 (360/PS3/PC)
- Forza Motorsport 3 (360)
- Infamous (PS3)
- New Super Mario Bros Wii (Wii)
- Resident Evil 5 (360/PS3/PC)
- GTA: Chinatown Wars (PSP/DS)
- Left 4 Dead 2 (360/PC)
AXIS of Reality is the only person to list Sony’s inFamous as he saw something special in the game. inFamous was a great PS3 exclusive gaining great reviews and showing what the PS3 could deliver.
Of course that alongside GTA: Chinatown Wars for the PSP or DS were actually better than what most probably thought they would be.
Other than that it’s the usual suspects in his Top 10 but games that more than deserve to be mentioned for what they have achieved.
dkpatriarch’s GOTY List:
- Assassin’s Creed 2 (360/PS3)
- Uncharted 2 (PS3)
- Flower (PSN)
- Resident Evil 5 (360/PS3/PC)
- Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (360/iPhone/PC)
- Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood (360/PS3/PC)
- Resistance: Retribution (PSP)
- Halo 3: ODST (360)
- Forza 3 (360)
- New Super Mario Bros (Wii)
dkpatriarch‘s choices reflect his focus on game narrative and interesting game environments, like Assassin’s Creed 2, Uncharted 2 and Call of Juarez, and experiences that often remind him of his gaming past, like Monkey Island (XBLA).
His family gaming is reflected in the innovative Flower (PSN), which his wife and sisters-in-laws have also fallen in love with, and New Super Mario Bros (Wii) and Halo 3: ODST which allow at-home local multiplayer mayhem, something a lot of games in the online age have forgotten.
Throw in some handheld gaming like Resistance: Retribution (PSP) and you can see that dkpatriarch plays what suits his interests rather than what is supposed to currently be popular, shying away from some big games like inFamous, Left4Dead 2 and Prototype.
There you have it: OXCGN’s Overall GOTY

The only thing wrong with RE5 was the crazy amount of breakable barrels and the lack of exploration I reckon
really?
resi 5 is the biggest disappointment in the history of video games to me.
where do i begin?
the controls are a pain in the a$$
they turned it into a action game when its suppose to be a survival horror.
the zombies just lacked strategy, and there was no suspense what so ever.
even the chainsaw and executor did not scare me, they take some thinking and strategy but nothing in resident evil 5 is suspenseful.
thats what dead space 2 is looking like too.
there trying to make issac a stronger more bas a$$ character.
there trying to make you pose more of a threat than your enemies.
thats the LAST! thing you want to do in a survival horror because it kills the suspense.
suspense in horror games is vital, without that its nothing.
but mate what you are saying about RE5 is all the same in RE4, except its the 2nd time around.
no its not resident evil 4 was scary as hell.
the controls were ok because it was a survival horror game, so the controls need to be like that, RE5 was a action game so it should have fast action controls not slow survival horror controls.
RE4 scared the crap out of me, and still does.
when i see the anvil guy i run as fast as i can papering my pants, constantly turning around to see how close to me he is.
in RE5 i stand my ground pump him with lead rinse and repeat.
RE4 is still one of the best games i have ever played so i guess it was inevitable that RE5 would disappoint me, but RE is suppose to be a survival horror game NOT a action game.
horror games have gone down the shitter.
there either turned into action games.
or there turned into torture porn games like SAW or silent hill homecoming.
even FEAR2
what the hell happened to that?
fear was freaking incredible!
but the second one was a glorified shooter with ghosts.
FEAR 2 + resident evil 5 = the 2 biggest disappointments of 2009.
just one question.
how can you even consider putting resident evil 5 in there?
that was the biggest disappointment of the century!
i never thought capcom could take that series from top trump phat load!
resident evil 4 was such a brilliant game, one of the best horror games.
seriously, might as well put rouge warrior up there.
i feel sorry for sucker punch though, out of all the GOTY nominees of all sites ive seen it get a nomination like 3 times.
that game is not getting anywhere near the recognition it deserves.
Yeah and that’s aaying somethign Shadow Wave the fact that many of these PS3 fanboys are 2dimensional with no substance sorry to say..
It’s getting quite ridiculous now to see that they are having a cry over U2 getting 2nd place and not GOTY. I could have easily made up an excuse and given Batman: Arkham Asylum Runner Up & I would of loved to do so.
But no I have to respect that majority of the staff chose ACII over U2 simple.
They fellow staff who did choose it seem to think that ACII has more substance than U2. They seem to take the historcial twist on what we already know is a lot more driving and interesting to them then just another 3rd person shooter with great graphics and superb facial animation.
At least you guys can take note that I voted for Uncharted 2 as the GOTY, and put AC2 way further down my top 10 list.
I don’t agree with the overall winner, frankly about 3 quarters through AC2 I was just wanting it to end, as it was getting awfully repetitive.
Uncharted 2, was simply the most amazing game I have played since Metal Gear Solid 4. (Which I reviewed on here for those of you playing at home)
Uncharted was a game that got family and friends who are NOT gamers to gather around the TV and watch me play through the entire Uncharted 2 game in one 8 hour intensive gaming session) That’s definitely something that not many games can do.
I don’t know why so many staff gave AC2 GOTY, it was sure a great game, but was no where as memorable as Uncharted or Metal Gear. But we are all entitled to our opinions, so fair enough for them.
When you reach the end of Uncharted 2, you take one huge breath as you realize your out of breath from the epicness that was Uncharted 2.
My wife enjoyed watching me play the first Uncharted too. I loved both!
I also obviously respect your top 10 GOTY choices and can see your viewpoint about UC2.
Now do we throw you off the site because you disagree with us and your favourite games are on PS3? No! We welcome your viewpoints and are glad we each have a different perspective and that you play multiplat.
Some of our writers like JRPGS (I hate them myself…), some loved Killzone 2 (I thought it was typical space marine in blown up environment stuff but with a few cool lighting effects and excellent cover and shoot system), some love racing games (I enjoy them, but not really my thing) and some love games like GTA (which I don’t).
I love that our staff are so different in our tastes. But yes, most of us agreed AC2 was better in our opinions than UC2. We like what we liked. Just like you liked what you liked.
Now everyone be happy with whatever game you love the most (which is fair enough!) and have a Merry Christmas for goodness sake
The guy who had Uncharted 2 as GOTY is obviously the smartest among all of you. Once again, xbox users show why they are the funniest users to laugh at. AC2, flower, and even a WII game……..
Flower was very refreshing and innovative and the casual market love it: how does that make xbox users look funny when it’s on PS3?
I believe Uncharted 2 is by far the best game of the year, and I don’t think AC2 makes it to the top 2, but with this kind of thing, you can never make everyone happy
i love oxcgn’s excuses for not giving Uncharted 2 goty but then again, this site has no credibility. so again no shock a B title got goty over a AAA title just because OXCGN didnt want to give it to a ps3 exclusive,
but then again why is a xbox cite even considering ps3 games in general.
Ahh there’s always several in a bunch . . . I suppose you skip the part where we don’t give a tinkers about what platform a game is on, and you’re the type that follow others blindly off cliffs because they said to do it, and that the earth is flat, because others said so. Plus you’re the type that believe that you shoould only like ONE thing, and liking more than that makes you an idiot with no credability. Well, tell that to the publishers that actually enjoy our site, at least they have some brains between their collective ears, unlike some so-called gamers – cough cough . . . .
But seriously, with an attitude like that, you’re not going to get far in life mate. Life is about striking a compromise and working with that so everyone wins . . . We’re gamers here, not blind fanboys like some on this page of comments.
Wow…frothing fanatical fanboys!
Once again, (sigh) though our platform of choice in the 360, we play games on any platform and enjoy them. Some of our top reviews have been for the likes of MGS4, KZ2, UC2, etc.
We are gamers first and have no agenda: we are an independent site.
(BTW some are pretty angry about the results of our GOTY reader’s poll which so far has UC2 winning by far! We are accused of rigging it FOR Uncharted 2!!)
As I said: if not for loving AC2 I would have happily given UC2 the crown (like Shadow Wave did), and am looking forward to Heavy Rain the most of any game next year!!!
So get over the whole “it’s an Xbox site so they must be paid or biased to choose an multiplat game” rubbish. In the magazine industry editors of Xbox mags become editors of PS3 mags and vice versa. They can change ‘allegiance’ because they are gamers who play both anyway!!! Like most of us here on this site.
why is the SDF even here?
if uncharted 2 is so brilliant go play it and get the ^%$# of a xbox 360 site.
jesus christ the amount of articles ive read latley dripping with SDF saliva is absolutely pathetic!
i guess the myth is true.
SDF do not buy games, they just talk about them.
OK, AC 2 was awesome, there’s no doubts about that. However it was not near the quality of Uncharted 2. Still, there were far worse games that you could have given the award to so i guess i can’t complain too much.
hehe yeah very good joke.. But no It’s funny that gamers regardless still cannot be pleased regardless of what is chosen..
I can safely assume though that the rest of the staff who put ACII over U2 can easily justify why they decided to put it at the No #1 spot.
You’d think we blackballed Uncharted 2 completely by saying it was a close second! Or that AC2 is a 360 exclusive or something… Uncharted 2 was certainly my GOTY until I played AC2.
I’m not going to replay UC2 unless in co-op, whereas I’ll be jumping around AC2′s universe for ages doing different things for fun.
assassin’s creed 2 huh? keep fighting the good fight, lol
I think Uncharted 2 deserved it this year, but I shall respect your opinion(s).
Ehhh… Hmm… Are you guys serious ? AC 2, Uncharted 2 ? Good games for sure, but we’re more into some kind of “Marketing Campaign Of The Year” here IMO. For sure GOTY 2011 will certainly be AC3 or Uncharted 3 or “I’ll serve you the same shit again and again for your whole life” n°41…
Well the sad thing is, “gamers” have chosen to ignor new IP’s bythe bucket load over the last year, or even two, making both publishers and developers see that it’s not profitable or safe to venture into “unknown’ territory. So we’ll continue to get the Mas Effect 3-4-5, the Assassin’s Creed 3-4-4, Uncharted 3-4-5 etc etc till the cows come home.
ANd who’s to blame, not the publishers, nor the developers . . the responsibility lays right at the gamers feet. They expect, no demand new IP’s, yet balk when they have to learn new ways of doing things. Such as controls, new environments, game styles, experimental approaches. They scream blue bloody murder that the dev/piub has gone away from conventional means, yet in the next breath, demand they make new IP’s.
Well if we don’t support and buy them, then they won’t make them.
Believe it, or not, they ARE in the business of making a profit, and they are in the business of creating new ideas, but if their enduser does not support the changes or new ideas, then why would you make games that require change. Especially if youcan produce a Batman, Superman, Ironman, etc etc year after year and have it out sell almost all AAA titles on the market.
We are our own worst enemies . .there’s simply no getting away from it.
Well what would you have rather had won? MW2 (Which is actually COD 6)??? Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time (Which is actually R & C 10 or something)??? Colin Mcrae: DIRT 2 (Which is actually CM 7 or maybe 8)??? Halo 3: ODST (Which is actually Halo 5, or at least, half of Halo 5)??? Forza Motorsport 3 (Which is actually Forza Motorsport with slightly more colour definition)??? L4D2 (Which is actually L4D with 2 new maps)???
There were a few fantastic new IP’s this year like Infamous, Batman: Arkham Asylum and…………….see? It’s a short list. IMO, Uncharted 2 was better than either of those games.
Good points there!
Here’s hoping some new IPs are at the top next year! (like Heavy Rain or Alan Wake…)
i forgot:MERRY CHRISTMAS OXCGN!!!!!
Thanks! Back at ya!
@john,dylantalon:i think that you haven’t played AC2 yet.it’s a splendid game, don’t get me wrong,i’v finished U2 6 times the graphics and the tehnical level are way above AC2,but AC2 has a better story&more diverstiy.in my opinion both deserves GOTY,but good choice OXCGN,respect!!!
Thanks Mike, most appreciated. We know we’ll never please everyone, or many in fact, as many seem to forget these are the games WE LIKED TO PLAY THE MOST from the game WE PURCHASED and played this year. Not the games that were all released and compared for technical prowess, detail, graphic fidelity etc etc etc.
They are what did/do it for US. And that is the difference. We’ve not IGN or GameSpot with “Official GOTY Awards” . .we are an Indie Game site whos team have listed THEIR preferences from the games they liked and loved to play.
thank you.
finally someone who can appreciate a game for its storyline and gameplay instead of graphics and complete utter hype.
for me GOTY would be a close race between infamous and assassins creed 2.
i cant choose though because both were equally as epic.
hahaha GrathiusXR don´t have a PS3.
This GOTY desicion is a Joke… funny ..hehe
or not?
The GOTY is Uncahrted2, i don´t have any doubt. ACII is a cosmetic camouflage for a disapointing bad designed game. For a touristic simulator is good, no more.
badly designed game?
is that why it takes over 20 hours to finish the campaign and a extra 5 to unlock everything in the game?
is that why it has the best story in a video game ever?
yes even better than MGS4s, at least this is a game and not a movie and also its no where near as confusing.
No offense, AC2 is a downright amazing game, but it’s very suspicious that each and every one of you voted it above UC2. BTW, open world doesn’t automatically make the game better than a more linear one. I know you guys try to be multiplatform, but this is obviously an xbox fansite. Nothing wrong with that at all, but you’re pretending to be something you’re not.
Not true…Shadow voted Uncharted at top spot. But there’s never going to be pleasing you unless YOUR pick is the one, is there?
actually open world games are automatically better than linear ones.
thats why all my favorite games are open world games, it gives you choice in what you can do.
uncharted 2 is far to repetitive for my liking every level is just a repeat of the last.
at least with open world games if you dont want to do a mission you can run around and create some trouble.
really, Assassin’s Creed? no offense that game clearly lacked the polish of Uncharted. and where’s the multiplayer??
OXGN = EPIC FAIL
no.
you = EPIC FAIL!
how would you put multiplayer into assassins creed 2?
seriously it would be completley unbalanced.
not all games need multiplayer to be good games, in fact ill argue games that dont have MP are normally better like bioshock or god of war or assassins creed or uncharted.
what a load of crap… AC2 hahaha…
you just couldn’t give it to the PS3 game… haha
better luck next time with your haloz
lol oh John you make me laugh very much so.. Did you read the introduction on the article
It would explain in clear day light how GOTY for us was chosen as a whole rather than a single person..
a grow a brain jesus christ!
assassins creed 2 is a brilliant game and deserved GOTY.
why?
because it actually has a story line.
whats the one in uncharted 2 i have forgotten?
you find a dagger, travel half way across the world to shamballa.
50K says you have not even played assassins creed 2 so go play it that grab the guide which explains every little detail in the game.
and if your not papering your pants at the end of that theres something severely wrong with you.
the amount of depth and thought that has gone into assassins creed 2 is absolutely mind boggling!
Haha I am just messing around with you guys hence the the tongue face at the end.
to each his own but assassins creed 2 is a mediocre game with nothing special about it. assassins creed won over games like uncharted 2, killzone 2 , infamous , ratchet and clank , and demons soul shows how insane these people are. why didnt they say halo odst or batman . why dont we reward developers for making dlc also . i dont understand people wanting to vote for bland and mediocre game instead of games that are pushing technological boundaries gameplay and story.
xbl/psn – dylantalon
You are obviously missing the ENTIRE point of our GOTY Awards.,and obviously did not read the preamble, just dived straight in and saw the game at the top, then never even bothered to read anything else.
Each team member based the sites choice on what game THEY found most enjoyable, not what game was technically superiour, longer, more involved etc etc.
It’s got nothing to do with the platform, as IF you bothered to read the whole thing, and the list of the team, many DID choose Uncharted 2, and in fact, when we reviewed Uncharted 2 (yes, we review PS3 games as well) we gave it a solid 9.5/10, which is a great score as far as we are concerned here. There’s no bias in our scoring, if the game is good, it gets the acknowledgment that it is.
If I had of given my top 10, then Forza 3 would have been at the top, but because this year I have only played xbox 360 games, I felt it ‘unfair’ to add my thoughts, plus I have had little time to play all the games available, so it would be heavily biased.
Again, showing we do not favour one over the other. Anyone that follows our site knows this . . . and many Sony fans follow our site because of the way approach each game.
No offense to AC2 but I have a feeling you guys voted AC2 because you didn’t want a ps3 exclusive to get game of the year. Nonetheless AC2 is still well deserved
WRONG. You are obviously one of the conspiracy crowd I knew would assume that. We chose the GOTY with only one criteria: which one was the best game this year, in each of our opinions.
Game platform was NOT a consideration at all. If there was no AC2 this year I would personally have happily chosen Uncharted 2.
(I even secretly hope Heavy Rain (which is PS3 exclusive) is GOTY 2010 so that it lives up to my expectations
)
No. AC 2 was chosen because U2 is a Ps3 exclusive.(U2 deserves it much more)
the only award uncharted 2 deserves is most over rated game in existence.
or biggest disappointment of the generation.
one of those.
