Finally, God has answered my prayers and allowed those who have been harboring this creature to finally unfold its wings and fly free . . .

Welcome to the next chapter in the Deus Ex franchise which is about to drop at the next big E3 between June 14th – 17th 2010 inclusive of the Keynote presentations. Which I might add that OXCGN (self included this year – hoot) will be attending and ideally getting some up-close-n-personal time with the guys at Edios and Square Enix and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

The trailer looks nothing short of ‘awesome’, and shows a great deal of promise and possibilities for the franchise to take a new step in “This-Gen”. One that it simply could not make in the previous generation of consoles, no matter what the platform.

And yes, while it is a ‘promotional’ trailer, just knowing both Square Enix and Eidos are combining in the development and production of the game leads me to believe that the end results will be close to what we would expect from these two great game houses, especially “This-Gen”.

This game has been a long  time in the making, and has undergone quite a few changes along the way, and finally it seems that it will see the light of day, and the arc angle will change the way of humanity for evermore.

Soon as we get more details and images, you can be sure that you’ll see them up here asap.

OXCGN will attempt to get some early interviews and other nice stuff to keep all Deus Ex fans nice and happy, and have all their gamer-glands excreting copious amounts of fluid and gooee stuff as they await the arrival of this game. [sub-editor: yuk!]

While we have no exact details on release dates etc. yet, my best bet would be a First Calender Quarter 2011 period or at the very latest, the First Financial Quarter for 2011, which is I believe is the April – June 2011 period. But we will find out some more details asap.

Although I can predict that some ardent Deus Ex fans will be somewhat disappointed with the ways which the game will have changed shape, I would like to point out that if a company is to move forward in the fast moving industry, and stay viable, it must change with the purchasing power and market share.

If it stays within a niche market, while others capitalise on the faster moving and faster selling genres, then you can be sure that company will be amongst the ones that get buried into an early grave.

  1. im both happy saddened and worried about this.
    i just spent 4K recently on a gaming PC and am yet to see a title that makes it sweat.
    desus ex use to be a PC exclusive and really pushed PCs to the limit on its original release.
    but now its on consoles im worried the PC port will be watered down like many other games have.

    did a law pass recently that said the PC is not allowed to have exclusives?

    hell intell have just announced their new 1000 USD I7 6 core CPU.
    what for?
    what do we need it for?
    ive got a I7 920 and it can run any game at max settings so why do we need a new more powerful CPU?
    there is nothing that requires it so why release it?

    Nvidia have dated their 480GTX and is apparently going to be 460 euros but what for?
    ok it has DX11 but besides that why do i need it?
    why would i spend 500+ pounds on one when i have a perfectly good 280GTX?

    see my point?
    its overkill, its like hiring a crane to lift a box of tissues!
    sure you could say its forward thinking, planning for the future but future for what?
    crysis is the most demanding game released ATM and that has been since 2006.
    its FINALLY going to change tomorrow when metro 2033 releases, but that only needs a quad core, I7 920 at absolute maximum optimum DX11 3D settings.

    so again i ask what for?


    1. I think one has to come to the realization that gaming is no longer a bedroom exclusive, no matter what the title.

      In todays highly volatile economic times, a game must sell at least 500k units in order to even break even. Far more than any game ‘break-even-point’ then even a few years ago.

      Being that the case, no developer in their right financial mind (they are run by stockholder remember, who want a return on their investment, and not run by gamers as such) will not release a title to an audience that for the most part plays the games in the bedroom.

      In case you’ve not noticed, gaming is now a “Living room entertainment era”, and no longer thought of a medium for only kids or computer nerds (no disrespect meant to anyone btw). The Loungeroom has now become the main ‘entertainment quarter’ of a home (and the homes of the future), and the current generations of gamers and families are welcoming that, not the older computer-media centers in bedrooms and the like.

      One has to also come to the understanding that in order for companies to advance, they MUST adapt to what the higher market will bear. The market is no longer the gaming PC platform (as a whole), but lays within the consoles of today, and tomorrow. Mobile gaming is having a huge influence on game developers as well, and it too will have a huge impact on gaming across the board.

      While games might well look, sound, and even function better on a high-end gaming rig, the % of ‘gaming consumers’ do not own such beasts, or even own and use a gaming PC. Rather, the larger purchasing market % now owns at least 2 consoles of one make or another, has at least 2 handheld devices, and uses those to communicate, be social, access the net, send emails, read the news, play games etc etc.

      They can even marry games between the handhelds and the consoles, and it has been shown that the larger share of purchasers spend LESS time playing the games than they did before (time wise per game) and in fact, have a smaller attention span due to their current lifestyle and generational traits. Which is why we also see game developers making smaller run games (game time wise) which caters for the lions share of purchasing public.

      SO, if you had a business that was sinking say 30-50mil into a game, and required at the bear minimum 500k sales to break even, would you make your game for an audience that is shrinking, and that is also NOT the lions share of the expendable cash when it comes to game purchases – these days.

      That’s NOT to say PC gaming is finished or coming to a close, but it has changed, and the developers and publishers know this, and have seen it coming for several years. We may not like it, it might not feel ‘right’ for those old-time gamers or “hardcore” gamers, but the reality is, game developers, and their publishers want and need to stay in business, and to do that, they need to SELL games en-mass, and most games only have a 2 week window in which to mark their mark and get a huge % of that investment back.

      SO you have a huge number of gamers now that buy, sell, trade console games, marketing firms and retailers that sell to a market that is basically console orientated, so guess which way they will be focusing their sales stock . .? yep, towards that market.

      No, we may not like it, but if we actually want games to play, then we must come to that realization . . like it – or not.


      1. yea i know and thats the problem.
        games use to be made because the developers had a passion, and wanted to put their idea on paper and see it be as good as it could be.
        now days developers really dont care weather their games are the best in the industry, as long as they bring in the dough thats all they care about.

        this industry use to be about quality over quantity.
        i can understand why that has changed, its because costs of making games has gone through the roof but still.

        there are exclusives that have sold extremely well, i wonder how much it cost epic to make gears 2 that sold through the roof!
        same with mass effect and mass effect 2.
        same with halo 3 and halo wars and halo ODST and i think its safe to say halo reach will be this years best selling game, bar none!

        IF you put your best foot forward you can create a exclusive and rake in the dough, ID, Valve, crytek.
        all developers who always create the game for PC than change whats required to get it working on consoles.
        look at world of warcraft that is a PC exclusive and well activision blizzard have made a shelling and a half off that!

        IF you put your best foot forward and create the best title you can, and show people this can only be done on PC, this is what a 4K PC gets you than people will want to give it a go.
        people who can afford it of course, thats why you need to make sure your game code is very well optimized so you can have extremely high optimal settings but low standard settings.

        i cant wait till RAGE, metro 2033, crysis 2, half life 2 epp 3 come out, than maybe, hopefully they will give developers a kick up the rear and get them into gear.


        1. I have to disagree with you there on some issues mate.

          Having spent time with many of the actual developers and teams that ‘make’ the games when they come here (Aust) for promotional purposes, I can tell you that they are in fact exceptionally passionate about their games, and about how their endusers have the best exeprience they can . .

          They listen to what we have to say as media if we are gamers as well when we are given code to play and give feedback on.

          Recently, during an extensive ‘hands-on’ with a game that was ‘just’ released this week, many of us foun dthe weapons select on the 360 extremely difficult. Given thatth egame really was only weeks from release, that dev house set about rectifying that, and making two distinct types of weapons selects for both PC and the 360.

          I call that attention to detail and passion . . .

          Plus, while we might not like it, piracy DOES cost billions a year. And, in the gaming industry, many gamers forget that it is a completely different medium to say movies.

          Games get a two week window of opportunity to sell the maximum numbers of games possible in that period of time, then the rest filter in over the following months. So, if you have a game that must sell well in order to get the investment back, which is huge these days, and trhey won’t be going down anytime soon, they need to make sure those copies do NOT get pirated, and thus loose sales.

          The publisher is the person that gets the money in, not the developer. The developer has been paid during the games development cycle, and a final payment is done on completeion ready for pressing. They may get royalties from ongoing sales, it just depends on how their deal was set up initially. So accusing Developers of doing things to rip gamers off just doesn’t wash.

          The publisher must make sure the numbers predicted match up with the actual sales, as they have sold the game to their investors on the premise that the game/s will turn a certain number (minimum sales) in order to get further investment to fund future games. So, if the game is pirated, the publisher looses those returns. Of which he only has ONE SLICE of – that is, when the game is sold initially off the shelf.

          So when you trade that game in, and the retailer sells it, and the next person does the same with the same game, etc etc, the publisher gets ZERO from it, the retailer gets 100% profit from the sale, and the prices are based on a game which includes the publishers share as well. Even though he gets none of it.

          The teams that make the games have to work within contsrants as well, they have budgets they need to stick to, or the publisher can pull the plug on the game, which has happened many times, especially last year (2009), where many games hit the back burner, and some were dumped into the trash . . . even after several million was spent on them.

          How does that publisher get that trashed investment back, through game sales.

          While all this is happening, game prices on the retail side have remained constant +- over the last 2-2.5 decades, and in fact, if you slip back say 15 – 20 years ago and check prices of games and consoles then, you’ll find the games were in fact dearer then, and the hardware even more dearer than it is now.

          You as a gamer get games that cost 10 times more to develop and deliver than they did say 20 yrs ago, yet pay the same or similar, and much less than if you compared it to say consumer electronics, cars, houses, fashion, even food. Yet we still complain.

          Be thankful that there are game developers out there willing to risk their shirts to make a game, sink large sums into it BEFORE they even get a publsiher on side. Then be glad that the publisher pays not only the developer, but also sinks tens of millions into just the promotional side of the game.

          Halo 3 cost MS over $US10 mil just on advertising and promotion, not including the 30-50 mil it cost to develop (yes, that’s the 3rd one in, and it still costs that much).

          We have a glut of games now, far too many in fact, yet as technology has advanced, many developers have brought out the games they have had in storage waiting for the tech to catch up in order for them to make their prized game. That’s passion in a big way. They could have just plonked the game out, made some money and done another. They instead sank a huge amount into it, saw the possibilities, but knew that if they brought it out, it simply would NOT be what they wanted to deliver.

          Gamers complain, and do so bitterly, and often without knowing the realities of what REALLY goes on within the industry . . . we all should be thankful that we have a thriving industry at all . .
