One thing that complements my gaming hobby is my collecting obsession. For every title that I’ve ever enjoyed, I either initially purchased the Limited/Collector’s/Special Edition, or tracked one down many years later.
I value each one of these items dearly, and there’s a huge collecting aspect in owning them.
The Assassin’s Creed series has had some particularly interesting Collectors Editions, with Assassin’s Creed 2 being the culmination. I didn’t have money at the time (and still am in the process of tracking one down), and regret not purchasing it. So, with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, I decided to buy the Limited Edition no matter what.
However, one thing that specifically annoys me is retailer-specific editions or region-specific editions. Splinter Cell: Conviction had a brilliant European Collector’s Edition, but the North American edition was… sub-par, at best. (I still bought it…)
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood set out to provide something different for American owners this time, and the result is… different.
The North American (Jack-In-Box) Collector’s Edition of Brotherhood includes:
- Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
- Bonus disc containing: the entire soundtrack (all 22 tracks!), every trailer/walkthrough, a brief making-of video, and a digital comic
- Map of Rome (with developer signatures replicated on the back)
- Two bonus single player areas
- Jack-in-the-Box, Assassin’s Creed style, with the Jack being a syringe-bearing doctor (or if you have the GameStop Limited Edition, a creepy Harlequin)
- Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Art Book
Now, I’m quite a fan of “different” or “unique” collector’s editions, but Brotherhood’s is simply strange.
I’m the type of person that loves making-of documentaries, and things of the like (Halo 3′s Legendary Edition is the best collector’s edition of all time, in my opinion, simply for the fact that the bonus DVDs were full to the brim of such content).
The bonus disc lives up to my standards of collecting-goodness, but the Jack-in-the-Box just looks out of place on my shelf. Ah well… it’s nostalgic to open the box and watch that critter jump out at you… over, and over, and over, and over…
Included below is a personal video of myself unboxing the Collector’s Edition.
