8 things I hate about Online Gamers
©2011 Kent Sobey
Over the last few years I have played a fairly substantial amount of Call of Duty online; mainly in the Modern Warfare series but also, more recently, Call of Duty:
Black Ops. I have come to find that not only do I love the series but I also hate it…
It is not so much the game that drives me mad, but the players. Some of the things I have come across would have had me quit Call of Duty altogether if I weren’t so damn addicted. Sadly,
I keep going back for more no matter how much I want to boycott the entire franchise for irritating me so much.
Instead of leaving the game I simultaneously love and hate so much I decided the best way to vent would be to put my thoughts down on paper (so to speak) and give everyone a list of the top 8 biggest irritations for both Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops (Online of course).
Some of my points apply to both games and other apply to just one of them.
#8 Quitters:
So, you are having a great game. Your kill to death ratio is over 3 and you have a care package and a sentry gun ready for delivery. You throw the canister which alerts the surreptitious helicopter to bring you your most valued package. It lands and you start collecting it. ‘Connecting to new host…’ The person hosting the game quits because they are not doing particularly well.
You can deal with this when it happens once. But now the team the coward was on is one player short and losing horribly. So another one quits and we go through the whole ordeal of picking another host again.
Now they are two players short and 2000 points behind. By this point you have most likely collected your ‘Chopper Gunner’ but there is only 1 brave soul left on the opposition team so there really is no point in using it.
You keep it, hoping that others will join, but eventually he gives up too and there is no one left to fight against and the ‘opposition team’ is forced to forfeit.
Now, this is a win on my record so it’s not the worst thing that could happen but it really does get on my nerves when I play against sore losers that don’t see a game through. This comes in number 8 because it’s not really a big deal but it worth mentioning.
#7 CTLM
Commando, Tactical knife, Lightweight, Marathon. This one applies to Modern Warfare 2 only (and you know who you are!). Wow… This one really bugs me. Now I fully understand that this is not cheating in the traditional sense of the word but it really is annoying.
This class set, in my humble opinion, is a quick way to ruin a game which would otherwise rely on actual aiming. There is very little skill involved and it ruins the game for everyone else who likes to use guns in this so called shooter.
A hugely unbalance combination which should never have been allowed but managed to slip through the cracks. Thank goodness it was left out in the most recent title in the franchise.
#6 Campers
Again, this one is not cheating but does deserve a mention. Not much explanation is needed here. If you stay in the same spot prone for more than a few minutes at a time you are camper. Also not high on my list at number 6 but irritating enough to make it.
The one question I always want to ask is ‘how can the game be fun staring at the same place and waiting for someone to enter your sights?’
#5 Grenade launcher, ‘danger close’ and ‘one man army’
For those who don’t know, ‘One man army’ is a perk that allows you to change class while you are alive rather than waiting until you die. This one is also only in Modern Warfare 2. ‘Danger close’ is a perk which make your explosive weapons cause more damage.
These are perfectly legitimate to use independently of each other but when combined you have unlimited grenade launcher ammunition by changing class every time you run out. I can’t believe that the developers intended it to be used this way.
Again, I am extremely happy that there is no way to do this in Black Ops.
#4 Players who don’t go for the objective
There is an option to play ‘Team Death Match’ so there is no excuse for this one. Players who are worried about their Kill to Death Ratio so much that they refuse to help the team achieve the objective should really not be playing objective based game modes.
If you are the last person alive on your team in a game of ‘Search and Destroy’ there should be some sort of penalty for not trying to plant or defuse the bomb purely because you are worried about dying.
The bottom line is that you are the only one who cares about you K/D ratio so don’t make everyone watch you waste time until there is none left and the other team wins – Play ‘Team Death Match’ or ‘Free For All’ rather.
#3 Show Offs
This one is closely linked to the one above but deserves a mention of its own. There seems to be some sort of necessity to spin before using the sniper rifle for a lot of people.
If you are playing a game mode that doesn’t depend on you then go ahead, get yourself killed by creating your own strange challenges like spinning three times before hitting someone with the Intervention without zooming (or ‘No Scoping’ as it has become known).
However, when your team relies on how well you do like in ‘Team Death Match’ or any of the objective based game modes don’t…
There is a way you can do it without affecting anyone else so why bring your whole team down because you wish to show off and create a video of something everyone knows could not be repeated very easily and for the most part was extremely lucky.
#2 Quick scopin’
This is almost certainly one of the most annoying things ever to be included (intentionally or not) in a first person shooter. To ‘quick scope’ is to use a sniper rifle and by quickly zooming and shooting at almost the same time the game automatically aims for you and you often get a kill.
Often used to shoot through walls etc. when the target can’t be seen but you know they are there somewhere. Now, you can argue with me as much as you like but it does not take skill to do and is much easier than playing with a sniper rifle properly.
This is why everyone does it, because it is easy! This is not what the sniper rifle is for! For a short time I thought it had been excluded from Black Ops but it seems I was wrong. It certainly is not as common, but it is there.
#1 “Glitchers”
I am fully aware the ‘glitchers’ is not a real word but I thought it fitting. What I mean by this is people who take advantage of glitches or flaws in the game; effectively cheating.
The one example that comes to mind immediately was a glitch on a map called ‘Fuel’ from one of the Modern Warfare 2 Map packs. There was a rock which you could get inside and effectively become invulnerable because you could see and shoot out but not be seen.
People who take advantage of such glitches should be banned for cheating. I know they are there and I know how to use them but I don’t because it ruins the game for people who don’t know how to use them or choose not to.
I could go through another 10 examples of other ways people have exploited glitches in the game but I am sure you get the idea. I am not sure whether I blame the players or the developers for these though; they really should have been ironed out during testing but they should also not be used.
This is my number one irritation when it comes to playing Call of Duty online because it is simply cheating and should not be tolerated. I implore anyone who comes across such players to please report them so that it can stop.
It would be most interesting to hear other people’s thoughts on the matter and see if they have anything to add to my list and perhaps take it up to 10 as the title suggests. Please comment and let us know.

These (among some others) are why I usually enjoy a great single player experience (Mass Effect, Uncharted) than multiplayer focused titles. When the experience is dependant on the fools who populate the internet then the game experience suffers. Until there is a way to properly punish cheaters, glitchers, quitters then it will never be as good as it could be unfortunately.
Or when people use akimbo something like pistols and spam the triggers
I camp all the time on Domination or any other objective based game.
It’s called “Defensive Strategy”
…”by quickly zooming and shooting at almost the same time the game automatically aims for you and you often get a kill.”
You’ve clearly never actually used a sniper then? It aims automatically? (edited), it simply shoots where the center of your screen is, it doesnt lock on to people, you still have to aim.
(edited) This is typical from u xboxers!! Dont blame the gamers, blame the game makers. THEY’re the bitches, making the game PERFECT for campers and cheaters. I dont understand why u guys keep on playing COD – play a proper FPS like Killzone and all the complaints above are rendered useless!
I having successfully left the call of duty franchise but maybe ill comeback for MW3 had some very interesting rumours, but i left and play Battlefield bad company and the only thing bad about it is people leaving and spawn camping but besides that its all about teamwork and having fun srsly.
Bad Company is great too. I haven’t played nearly as much of it as I have COD but I think I will try to get back into it at some stage. Medal of Honor is also good fun online if you are looking for something else to play.
So basically you took a total shot at MW2. Why generalize it as Online Gamers when other games have totally different circumstances.
You also forgot to mention noob tubers. Most gamers in MW2 don’t play with a strategy or the right skill, so that’s why Quickscoping is so popular along with run and gunning and so on. Camping I don’t mind cause it happens in real life is as well, just throw a semtex or flash bang their way.
he did mention noob tubers, at #5
Hackers as number #1… Especially on mw2 when they do those red boxes and you can shoot through walls.
Yes, you are absolutely right. Hackers should have been mentioned too. They drive me mad!
This list should really be called “8 things I hate about Call of Duty players”.
Everything you basically listed is in Call of Dooty…. move onto other online video games. Christ.
I disagree. Some of the things said here were specific to COD, but I’ve never played an online FPS that didn’t suffer from the same user issues.
Glitches, Show Offs, Lack of teamwork (not going for objectives), Quitters, and Campers, are absolutely not exclusive to COD. In fact, other than glitches, my list is all about people being jackasses.
As for camping… legitimate strategy, if you are good at camping, be a camper. If I see your hidey-hole, you will move.
Not to mention boosters. Always trying to get a nuke on MW2.
Again, another one that should have been added. Although, sometimes they can be fun. The best thing to do when you find a booster is to follow him around and just ruin everything. If he leaves the game then try and join his session and keep spoiling his fun until he quits. Then report him of course…
yaaaa i totally agree wit ya these tings reali annoy me 2 n shudnt be allowed in the game another thing that annoys me is boosting using the tactical insertion that reali annoys me dnt see any point in it where is the fun in it lyk wel anyway yaaa i agree with most your points
