A Light Onslaught of Action

The second press conference of E3 week put Electronic Arts in the spotlight.
Another overall solid conference, but light on announcements.
OXCGN gives you the scoop.
Summary of affairs
Electronic Arts began their keynote by enthusiastically stating how they don’t have “random celebrity guests” but only games.
Ironically, the EA conference was light compared to that of Konami and Microsoft, but came off better in what little it did present and announce.
There isn’t too much to discuss about this conference, and the major points are listed in the next section.
Mass Effect 3 was shown and dated, with the fateful date being March 6, 2012.
A new Need For Speed was announced, titled The Run. Featuring Battlefield 3‘s Frostbite Engine 2, The Run will be on the cutting edge of technology.
And for the first time, players will be able to leave their vehicles. Some convoluted story has the main character “rushing” to New York city, and he is being pursued the entire way. This will undoubtedly be an interesting take on the racing genre, although I am not impressed.
Skipping over a few boring segments, the chief showcased events were that of Insomniac Games‘ new title, and Battlefield 3.
Insomniac’s new title is called OverStrike. Starring four different characters with varying abilities, the game is about doing special ops work, although this is unconfirmed, as only a brief trailer was shown detailing the characters.
This is the game I waited the entire briefing for, and yet we got little to no information on it. I’m just a little disappointed.
And finally, Battlefield 3 was shown, with a short multiplayer trailer, a date on the multiplayer beta, a single-player gameplay segment, and finally, an announcement on the title itself.
This presentation in particular ticked me off, as it was a somewhat generic brown-and-bloom level with not much action until the end.
Key points
Mass Effect 3 dated, March 6th, 2012- Need For Speed: The Run announced, using Frostbite 2; will have out-of-car gameplay segments
- New SSX title announced, largest one yet
- The Sims Social announced; play out Facebook events in the Sims?
- The Old Republic trailer; no date yet
- New game: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning; medieval action game
- New Insomniac multiplatform game: OverStrike
- Battlefield 3 multiplayer trailer and single player tank section showcased
- Beta dated: September 2011
- Battlefield 3 dated: October 25
Report card
The Electronic Arts conference was overall presented in a much better manner than that of Konami and Microsoft, but was lacking in overall content, whether it be big announcements or even gameplay footage (except FIFA, because that took up a third of the conference).
Why does Mass Effect 3 get literally two minutes, but we can get a Battlefield 3 segment where you drive in a straight line for over five minutes with god mode enabled?
To sum it all up, the conference was light on the action but came out to be of better quality than that of Konami and slightly better than Microsoft. C+
