75 Minutes of Doodlying

Ubisoft has just concluded their press conference at E3 2011.
We had our ups. We had our downs.
Unfortunately, there were more downs than ups.
OXCGN reports on the conference, and has one thing to say: doodly.
To sum it all up…
Sometimes a press event can be defined by a person. Sometimes, it can be defined by a game.
Ubisoft in recent years has had a plethora of interesting hosts. And this year, they brought in the ‘famous’ Mr. Caffeine.
Mr. Caffeine was bouncing off the walls in an awkward, entertaining manner that kept us interested through the whole conference.
When Mr. Caffeine would change segments to speak about, he would enthusiastically say DOODLY DOODLY DOODLY and make a hand motion.
And that sums up what the Ubi conference essentially was: an hour and a quarter of doodlying.
It opened with key demonstrations of a new Rayman title, Far Cry 3, and Ghost Recon: Future soldier.
Mr. Caffeine kept us in good spirits throughout, but his cheerful zaniness could not deter the boring presentations given for the length of the conference. Fitness Games, another Rayman Raving Rabbids title (which has to be one of the most embarrassing E3 moments this year) and a multitude of other overall uninteresting titles flooded around 80% of the keynote event.
In particular, during the middle section, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software walked out and talked about how they have reinvented World War 2 games. And they’re “doing it again” with Brothers In Arms: Furious 4, which I am extremely disappointed with (but I’ll tackle that in another article).
It ended on an epic note with a spectacular Assassin’s Creed: Revelations trailer and demo, and Mr. Caffeine sending us off.
Key points
-
New 2-d Rayman title
- Far Cry 3
- Ghost Recon: Future Soldier coop announced; Ghost Recon: Online detailed
- New Inglorious Basterds-esque Brothers In Arms title: Furious 4
- Just Dance 3
- Rocksmith guitar game
- Assassin’s Creed: Revelations full length trailer and gameplay segment
Report card
Ubisoft put on a very disappointing show in 2010. While the 2011 show was nowhere near as bad, they started it off with great stuff, filled it to the brim with shovelware and games the core audience cares zip about, and ended it with a great game.
They packaged the garbage in between the heaven.
I was extremely disappointed at the lack of a new Splinter Cell, and the lack of a new Rainbow Six.
Ubisoft showed promising games, but we didn’t really get what we wanted to find out. D-
