QuakeCon is one of my favorite events in the gaming industry.

It’s the ultimate place for gamers to just arrive, set up, kick ass and have fun. It’s been described as “the Woodstock of gaming” and “four days of peace, love and rockets.”

The primary drawing (and the original concept) of QuakeCon is the Bring Your Own Computer, or BYOC. Located within the depths of the Hilton Anatole hotel, it’s in a momentous arena with hundreds of tables and thousands of attendee-brought computers.

When you’re not fragging late into the night in the BYOC, there are plenty of other things to tide you over and entertain you, such as the exhibit hall, where tons of raffles, drawings, promotions, sponsor presentations, demos and most importantly, free stuff, is. And that’s only skimming the surface of things to do at QuakeCon!

Bethesda has dropped full details on what they will be showing at QuakeCon 2011, and the official press release is below.

QuakeCon 2011

We’re pleased to announce that QuakeCon, the ultimate video game festival, will kick off on Thursday, August 4th 2011 with a keynote address from John Carmack, co-founder and Technical Director of id Software.

During the show attendees will also have the opportunity to see Todd Howard, Game Director of Bethesda Game Studios, present the award-winning The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim publicly for the first time. QuakeCon will also see the first public demo of the highly-acclaimed Prey 2, which will be demoed by Chris Rhinehart, Project Lead at Human Head Studios. In addition to being able to play RAGE on the show floor, attendees will be able to check out a special presentation of the award-winning shooter given by Matt Hooper, the game’s Design Director.

Skyrim is the next installment in the award-winning Elder Scrolls series and reimagines and revolutionizes the open-world fantasy epic, bringing to life a complete virtual world open for you to explore any way you choose. Recently at E3 2011, Skyrim was awarded over 25 awards, received 45 nominations and was voted ‘Best Console Game’ and ‘Best Role Playing Game’ by the Game Critics Awards, an independent group made up of journalists from 31 leading North American media outlets that cover the videogame industry. The game will be released worldwide on November 11, 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Games for Windows.

Prey 2, the sequel to the award-winning 2006 game, is an open world sci-fi shooter about Killian Samuels, a Federal Marshall who is abducted by a cruel race of aliens. Playing as Killian, you find yourself marooned on an alien planet called Exodus. While working as a bounty hunter, you uncover a plot that threatens your home world and it’s up to you to take action. Prey 2 garnered a collection of awards and accolades during E3 2011. It was voted ‘One of the Most Valuable Games at E3’ by editors at PC Gamer and was nominated for over 20 awards including ‘Best Action Game’ by the Game Critics Awards.

RAGE features intense first-person shooter action, breakneck vehicle combat, an expansive world to explore and jaw-dropping graphics powered by id’s revolutionary id Tech™ 5 technology. Set in the not-too-distant future after an asteroid impacts Earth, you emerge into a vast wasteland to discover humanity working to rebuild itself against such forces as bandit gangs, mutants, and more. RAGE promises an experience like no other. RAGE, the highly-anticipated game under development at id Software, is slated for release on October 4th, 2011 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

QuakeCon 2011 will take place at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX. The event remains FREE to general admission and BYOC attendees thanks to the support of id and Bethesda Softworks, as well as the QuakeCon volunteer staff and the 2011 event sponsors and exhibitors. Doors to the QuakeCon BYOC will open on Thursday, August 4th at 9:00am CST and will remain open through 12:00pm CST on Sunday, August 7th.

While the event is becoming more of a tradeshow ever since Zenimax bought id Software, that doesn’t detract from the fun factor and sheer awesomeness of things like the BYOC.

We’ll have hands-on time with RAGE, and hopefully get some exclusive interviews about Prey 2, RAGE, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at the event.

Until then, are you ready for the greatest LAN party in the United States of America?
