Where To Next For Call of Duty?

Now that the hype from Modern Warfare 3 is starting to settle I thought it might be a good idea to speculate a little.
For the record, I have absolutely no idea what’s coming next in the Call of Duty franchise but wanted to throw a few ideas out there and see what the rest of you think.
If you haven’t finished Modern Warfare 3 just yet then you might not want to read on because there’s a strong possibility I could ruin the ending for you.
You have been warned!
At least that’s how they’ve been doing it for the past few years so that would be a fairly reasonable assumption.
Space….The Final Frontier
One thing we know that Treyarch have already dabbled with a little is traditional science fiction.
There’ve been a few Zombie maps that have a rather ‘spacey’ vibe, either set on the moon or with rockets and other such interstellar goodies.
This might just be a hint for where the next game is going – ok, maybe they didn’t mean it to be, but who cares- they know how to do zero gravity now so that’s got to be something.
Could we see a Call of Duty set on a distant planet, the moon, or just a couple of space ships next?
This would be a wild move and would change the whole realistic angle they’ve had going, but it is probably time they did something different isn’t it?
Of all the ideas I’ve got rattling around in my head I’ll admit that this is probably the least likely to happen but I still think it would be cool.
Operation Black, The Second
Next, we could of course see Black Ops 2.
I can hear all the booing in the background now. This wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world but I don’t think most people out there would agree with me because let’s face it, following Modern Warfare 2 was not easy for them.
The great thing about Black Ops 2 would be that it wouldn’t even have to be a direct sequel; they could just throw a couple of familiar faces in there like they did with Resnov in the first one.
They could have a completely new story.
Personally, while I would love another Black Ops game I don’t think they should do it now.
Don’t mention the (World) War (2)…
Another option for them would be going back to their roots and hitting us with a World War 2 game again.
Please, Please, Please don’t do that Activision!
It’s tired and we’ve won the war many time’s now and have no need to do it again.
The only great thing about WW2 games is that they are historic and at least have a little bit of fact in them.
COD: Future Warfare
Now, on to my personal favourite and in my opinion the most likely to happen, Call of Duty: Future Warfare.
Although the title’s probably not likely, I think we will see a gritty futuristic game next. And why not?
They’ve moved away from being factual now and taken liberties with all sorts of things, from weapons, to perks and even made up a new World War, so why not take it one step further and go into the future?
Imagine having a laser in an online game – ok that wouldn’t be that great but you get the idea.
On second thought, I don’t think it’s the most likely to happen but I can dream can’t I?
All of that aside, one thing I am quite certain they will do is start another trilogy.
If you get the first one right, you are basically guaranteed sales for the second and third games so to do it any other way is just plain stupid.
It also means they don’t have to put much thought into what to do after the first one’s released, they can just get going with the new one right away.
Do you think that both Treyarch and Infinity Ward could run trilogies at the same time though or will only one of them get that honour?
No Modern Warfare 4
One thing we know for certain is that the next game will not be Modern Warfare 4.
That being said, what are the chances that Infinity Wards next game will be MW 4 after Treyarch have had their turn?
There certainly are enough characters left alive at the end of MW3 to keep it going with a little bit of clever writing so it’s not impossible.
Captain Price, as he has proven to us several times, cannot die so we could see him on our TV’s yet again. Perhaps a little peak into his past could work too, just so long as they bring Ghost, Roach and Soap back. Sniff…
Let’s hope they don’t go there though because the Modern Warfare trilogy is one of the best in gaming history and we would hate to ruin it, like the last season of Lost did to the previous 5.
Let that be a warning to you Infinity Ward, if you decide to dabble more in the Modern Warfare franchise, you’d better get it right.
So with all of those thrown out there we’ll leave it to you to give it a little thought.
We would love to hear what other ideas are hanging about so please to drop us a comment to let us know what you think is likely to be the next Call of Duty game.
No doubt you have until April because that’s seems to be when they announce their yearly update.
Fine by me, keep them coming!
