ShadowOfTheEternals_oxcgn1.5There is a trial going on right now in cyberspace.  And we are the jury.

At stake is the reputation of the man largely credited for the cult favourite Gamecube game Eternal Darkness and the future of the ‘spiritual successor’ to that title which is struggling for backers on Kickstarter, Shadow of the Eternals.

But the question is if the trial by the internet community is even valid or right, or simply a case of Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbel’s ‘if you repeat a lie often enough it will become the truth’.

Anno Online captures this essence and presents you with a browser-based massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that allows you to establish your own civilisation from its very roots.

OXCGN was given the opportunity to ‘explore’ the closed beta of the game as the developer, Ubisoft Blue Byte, puts on the finishing touches.

I had one question going in: will it be the same traditional Anno game in a new format, or something completely different?

Dammit Jim, I’m a movie tie-in, not an innovative game!

Star Trek cover artHollywood seems to be stuffing us full of sequels, prequels and re-boots these days. Most of them are terrible, but once in a while a good one sneaks through. Star Trek was one such successful re-boot, and now we have the sequel rapidly approaching.

Simply titled Star Trek: The Video Game, the game was released as a tie in to the new movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness.  It is set sometime between the two movies and promised a whole lot for Star Trek fans. It promised, but did it deliver?

Well the uninspired title gives you a hint, unfortunately.

The devs trying to bring that ‘other’ hockey into video gaming

942578_10151610161390081_1797352273_nIce hockey is known as the fast, furious, and sometimes violent game that Canadians and Europeans are fond of.  EA has made a successful NHL game franchise out of its fame.

However, there is another hockey that is played by many more nations and also features in Olympic challenges, yet has never been brought to video gaming.

Sometimes called ‘field’ hockey, this hockey used to be a slow, plodding grass sport that was played largely in schools as an extra sport elective.  But the game has evolved dramatically, much to most people who take the time to find out’s surprise.

Now more often played on high quality artificial water or hybrid turf, the game is fast and skilful like ice hockey, but tactical and engrossing like soccer/football.  With changes to rules to get rid of offsides and most of the whistle calls, the ploddy grass game has become much more exciting to watch and play.

fieldhockeygame_oxcgn1A group of hockey players and game developers have decided to get a video game version of the sport onto the market.  After all, if AFL football, a game exclusively played in only a small portion of Australia, can have a video game, a sport played by millions around the world should get one too.

I asked Simon Buckley, founding member of Urbanwarfare Studios and team lead for the FHG project, a few key questions to see how they planned to get this game made, considering most people in the big spending markets (eg. USA) still don’t know much about the ‘new’ field hockey.
