Xbox 360 Cosmetic Case Mods:
Halo 3, Xbox360 Laptop, Rockstar-360
This area will deal with the various expressions Xbox-Gamers have towards their various models of Xbox’s, be that the old tried and true BBB (big black box) or the new Xbox360 (Elite, pro, Halo 3 etc).
No actual how-to’s will be posted, as that’s not my area of expertise, but links or articles on the topic will be provided, so that if the inspiration did grab you, you could follow the idea up and do something yourself.
So the very first cab off the rank should be the new little Xbox mod some nice chappie has made to enhance the look of the old BBB . . well actually, it’s now a nice sleek white box, and very Apple-Like.
You’ll find the article over at Make Technology . . . plus a pic of it vertically and in matte black, which does look rather fetching actually. But I’m leaning more towards the white one myself.
Update:
Here are some great new cases we’ve dug up, this time it is an excellent looking Halo 3 Case-Mod that really does look brilliant. Click on any of the pics for a closer look as the detail work in this is very inspiring indeed. Check the detail in the surrounding ground and the man-cannon as well. An eye for detail is what is needed in modelling like this, and this guy (or girl) has put a great deal of effort and thought into this.
Actually, it has spured me on to thinking about a possible Case-Modded 360 as a major prize at some stage. And evenlooking at some Airbrushed Cases as prizes to go along with major AAA Title games . .We found these up at Gizmodo, on eof the most respected, and one of the biggest Gadget-Blogs on the net bar Engadget (both share the limelight in that department, and both hate each other to bits – useless bit of trivia for you there.)
But that aside, this case-mod certainly deserves a great deal of credit to its builder/creator. Making it a worthwhile talking point in any gamers home, or any collectors home for that matter. From someone who used to build 24th scale hot rods and street machine models, I sure do appreciate the fine details thathave gone into this particular Xbox 360 Case-Mod. Enjoy the pics.

Anyhow, here’s some great pics, do check out the full sized versions, and thanks to Gizmodo for the pics.
The King of Custom Building Ben Heck:
If you’ve not heard of his name, Benjamin Heckendorn (aka Ben Heck), then perhaps you’ve seen or heard of the 3 great Xbox Laptops this guy has made over the last few years.
Each one takes around 6 months to complete, and that is being conservative time wise. And if you think you’ll grab his phone numbe ro email and ask him to pop one out for you, think again. His current backlog of “projects” an dthe hugh cost of hand making something lik ethis is well out of the reach of the normal gamer.

Prior to his latest version, it’s predecessor was the all familiar Halo 360, which eventually inspired the above re-make which was only recently completed.

Check out Ben’s detailed gallery of Version II
And of course there’s his First version of the 360 laptop that certainly won him some praise. And you can see the refinements as he went along.

Even his simple 360PS3 controller mod takes a full days work, and would cost you the price of a full blown system at normal RRP. Just fo rthe controller. HIs work is by all means worth every cent, as you’re asking for a handcrafted item here, not something that it thrown together in a last minute.
This man is a force to be reconed with when it comes to Hand-made gaming items . . check his site out, and the huge list of Gaming Items he has made over the years.
Other Xbox360 Game Cases for inspirational purposes:
Here’s an array of various screens of cases for your enjoyment, If they inspire you to create something unique, then by all means let us know about it, and share it with the rest of the 360 community.
We can’t be seen to be educting you on how to go about modding a xbox360, but we can show you the simple cosmetic case mods that are being done around the world.

xbox 360 portable version III thats the way to go if only I had the money
Can i just take an xbox controller and switch the buttons, instead of actually just moving the ps3 controller into the xbox 360 shell? and will a ps2 controller work??? because i dont have a ps3
If you go to Ben’s site, there’s a discussion on how he did it (PS360 controller) . .It’s by far the best controller ergonomically, and fits the average hand like a glove. Which is why Ben chose the controller in the first place.
I think there’s also a sort of how-to on his site. The link is in the article, so just search for it in the body text on OXCGN and you’ll find it mate. I know that the buttons might be interchangeable, but it’s the circuitry that is different, which is what he tinkered with I believe.
Hi, your web is very nice, I have my own website and its for the mods on the Xbox360, a lot of gallery and pics abot cases, controller and more…
Keep it working your site is very good
The idea of the 360 controller is because it IS ergonomically designed, rather than simply a joypad with buttons to do a job.
If you grab a 360 controller and place your hands on it, you thumbs fall into the normal pattern where they would sit when relaxed.
Try this, relax your hands in a open but curled position as if you were going to clasp your hands, allow your fingers to touch slightly, do this as relaxed as you can, and do so with your thumbs upward as you would normally when clasping something.
Now note that your left thumb is actually forward in relation to your right thumb, and that they are “opposed” to each other rather than “next” to each other. And also notice where your first and second fingers sit in a relaxed pattern.
The thumbs fall in almost the exact same place the right and left hand analogue sticks fall on the controller, and the r/h and l/h first and second fingers fall where both triggers are and the inside edge of the first fingers lay where the r/h and l/h bumper buttons are.
Now, go and grab any PS controller, do the exact same thing and notice how you have to actually move your hands and fingers around, pull back your left thumb to meet the left analogue stick, and even pull back the r/h thumb to meet the corresponding analogue stick.
Then notice how the triggers on the PS controller, which are not actually real progressive triggers btw and the bumper buttons are. They are not ergonomically positioned, so that if you were playing with the controller for several hours, your hands would not feel relaxed at all, and actually contribute to acute fatigue and possible RSI.
The 360 controller is not like this at all. It was originally molded in several young adults hands in relaxed positions with foam that took the shape of the hands, from this they then slowly crafted a shape that fitted in with a large % of players hands and came up with what you see now, and did so with attachments in mind such as the Chat-pad etc. Which is why when it’s fitted, it just seem like a normal part of the unit, rather than something tacked on.
One of Ben’s biggest things with design is ergonomics, it’s why he has designed several items for the handicapped and even a lefties controller and a single handed controller that simply fits into the palm of ones hands and allows for the normal function of closing and opening your palm to activate some functions.
This is the job of a GOOD designer, not designers that simply make this to sell goods. The PS3 PS2 etc controllers would have to be some of the worst controllers out, even 3rd party controllers follow normal ergonomic rules and functions, but Sony “know best” and you buy what they tell you to buy, not design things that work best for you.
what is the point in the Playstation controller mod? is it because the xbox controller is so much more comfortable?
did you make the case mods your self?
The R* case is definitely one of the better case-mods around. I am still looking around for as many as possible, and have several I’ll be uploading soon.
Once my older one passes it’s warranty period, I’ll be doing some work on the case, but right now, skinz are my thing.
awesome mods man!
That rockstar one is tight.
