Call of Duty vs. Battlefield: How Gamers Ruin Both… and Gaming

When competition ruins appreciation

BAttlefield-4-oxcgnAs gamers, we often come to establish what we think of a game based on our previous experiences.

This shooter is realistic because head shots kill people in one shot, this racer is awesome because my Camaro sounds really loud (just like Dad’s—for those of us with dads that have Camaros), this Mario game is fun because it makes funny sounds and I laughed my ass off (LMFAO for you more apt readers).

We also make comparisons based on games we did or didn’t like before.

Halo is better than Quake because the graphics are better, or, for a more ignorant comparison, World of Warcraft is the worst game ever “’cuz only nerds play that game. YOLO. Swagg.”

But what we fail to do is recognize the smaller accomplishments that actually construct a game’s ‘personality’, as I like to call it.

Something that comparing a game to another simply just can’t do.

Is competition ruining modern gaming?

dmc-wallpaper-3.jpgA friend on my Twitter earlier this morning exposed people to a petition (noting why gamers can’t be taken seriously) asking to “Get Ninja Theory’s DmC: Devil May Cry pulled off the shelves“, and all I could honesty think off in this instance was how absurd this whole kerfuffle has become.

When Halo 4‘s embargo lifted, reviews from sites such as IGN, Stevivor and Destructoid flooded the internet with praise and it seemed that 343 Industries’ entry into the Halo franchise, and the first of the new Reclaimer trilogy, was on the right track to be one of the best console exclusive games.

A triumphant return for the Master Chief and Cortana who have been out of commission since 2007.

That was until other journalists coming in after the flurry of early reviews posted theirs.

Some of them weren’t nearly as approving as the those that came before it.

Worse still, other sites were quick to jump to criticise Halo 4 for the silliest of reasons.

With the 2012 October to November game and console launch window being one of the most promising and exciting yet, gamers all around are rejoicing at the vast collection of games and consoles that they can purchase during the year’s last months.

I personally have a massive list of must buys that I have only just started to reduce thanks to the recent releases of Dishonored and Fable: The Journey.

However the problem many gamers will now have to address is the issue of expense.

Too much choice?
