OXCGN’s Defiance Review

Is this a game-TV show cross-media success story?

defiance_oxcgn_screenshot 1.5MMOs haven’t been in abundant supply for this generation of consoles, so when the opportunity to play one arises it should definitely be taken.

Defiance is a third person shooter MMO that is closely linked to a television series of the same name.

But can the trans-media game stand alone?

Many years before the game starts an alliance of Aliens, known as the Votans, arrives on Earths doorstep, not to invade, but immigrate from their dying system.

The Votans consist of 8 separate alien races, and their transition into life on Earth doesn’t go so well. The result is the Pale Wars, in which the world is partly terra-formed and a lot of Humans and Votans died.

Army_of_two_devil_oxcgn_screenshot 1.5Back in 2008 we got out first taste of Army of Two. It was pretty well received and had some new and very clever mechanics that made co-op play much more interesting.

A couple years later (in 2010) we got the sequel, called The 40th Day, which was equally well received and again had a strong focus on co-op play.

Before I continue with this review I’ll just state for the record that I am a very big fan of the first two games and I was very excited to play this one.

Now we’ve been given our third instalment in the franchise, called The Devils Cartel, but how does it stack up against its two predecessors?

It has begun!

injustice box art oxcgnLet’s wind the clock back to 2007 when Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was released.

While it was an awesome cross-over, it wasn’t exactly met with the best reception. It was not a bad game by any means, and it did have some nifty gameplay features like Falling Kombat and Klose Kombat (which were interestingly enjoyable).

The problem with it was, due to how violent and graphic Mortal Kombat is, the game was heavily tamed because of license restrictions with DC characters. This kept it from its true potential.

Everything about Injustice: Gods Among Us, however, does justice to the DC Universe and its characters. Whilst it may not be as violent as Mortal Kombat, it is crafted to suit the DC Universe more than what MK v DC was.

The DC characters were basically tacked onto a Mortal Kombat game whereas Injustice is a stand-alone game where Netherrealm had more freedom to work with. (more…)

star-trek-the-game_screenshot1_oxcgnWith the highly anticipated Star Trek: Into Darkness coming to cinemas soon in May, it’s the perfect time to play a long awaited quality Star Trek game.

If you haven’t seen the trailers and footage of the game, make sure you watch the trailer below.

It isn’t just getting the opportunistic movie tie-in treatment to make a few bucks either.  While Star Wars has had a number of video game versions over the years, Star Trek hasn’t been in video game form for some time, except as the spaceship game, Star Trek: Legacy.

Developer Digital Extremes looks to have created a game that looks like Gears of War meets Mass Effect that will hold its own as a quality entertainment product.

star-trek-the-game_screenshot2_oxcgnIt is a co-op shooter where you can play as either Spock or Kirk, each with different weapons and gameplay styles, as you fight the dreaded Gorn who have invaded a Vulcan colony.

Star Trek the video game is set after the 2009 Star Trek film, but before Star Trek: Into Darkness and OXCGN readers can win one of 5 copies of the game.
