Console Game Community Map Making: Where’s the Love?

One day I was sitting at my primitive five-year-old computer playing the classic Age Of Empires when I came across a simple scenario maker that was included in the game.

I started using it and got hooked into the scenario making for hours- even days. It became just as fun as the game.  Suddenly I was drawn into the wonderful world of user-created gaming.

But when I got my Xbox 360 there were no such scenario makers or map editors. I was sorely disappointed.

Yes, since then there have a been a couple, which I discuss later, but compared with PC gaming it is pathetically lacking on sophisticated consoles like the 360 and PS3.  Why?

SO why don’t we have the map-making facilities . . . ?

Microsoft has taken a leaf out of Valve’s Steam with Major Nelson announcing Xbox Live‘s first ever “Inventory Blowout Sale”. Ten Xbox Live Arcade titles at 50% off (give or take) for a week!

But beware: As any hardened Steamer will tell you, you’re likely to buy a lot more than you’ll ever play. So for the more economically sensitive gamers amongst us, OXCGN has bought them all so you don’t have to! From 10/10 to 1/10, here is our rundown of what we hope is the first of many Inventory Blowout Sales to come.

OXCGN’s Most Loved XBLA Games

Not every quality gaming experience comes from a full retail-sized video game these days. The new surprising breed of gameplay fun can actually come from a downloaded smaller and less expensive bite-sized game from Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA), Playstation 3′s Playstation Network (PSN), or Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console.

While we enjoy these downloadable games from all consoles (Flower is an amazing concept!), we will be looking at our staff’s most loved XBLA games. See if you agree with us, or if you have your own favourites and comment at the bottom of the article.

Massive Xbox Games List: “It’s Good To Play Together” These Holidays!

xmas1983_cover_largeA nice new section that we will be exploring in 2009 is family gaming.  As well as looking at the games we as parents can share with our children, we will also explore issues relating to online behaviour and how to navigate the increasingly adult-focused game world with our children.

We believe that being involved in video games with your child is not only the bonding fun experience of playing together and relating to their interest, but also the best way to educate yourself to better understand the content of the games they play.  Just as with the Internet, film, or TV, being involved allows you to make the decisions you believe are in the interests of your child more accurately.

Come see what games you can play with the family this Christmas . . .
