A Blizzard is coming, and Hell follows…

I’m about to say something that will undoubtedly cause hateful comments, death threats, and a massive loss of respect: I have yet to play a Diablo title.

I grew up on console gaming, with brief forays into Battlefield and Call of Duty at their respective initial entries; as such, Blizzard isn’t a name that causes heart palpitations or tears of pure unadulterated joy on my part.

After having a sudden burst of StarCraft 2 fever this past week (nineteen hours so far), I received a magical invitation from the gaming gods: Diablo III beckoned, and I answered the call.

What I found was a gem that managed to impress me, a feat no Blizzard title has managed to accomplish up to this point.

You may find that in the preview below, many basic concepts are elaborated upon. This is on purpose, to educate others such as myself that aren’t as familiar with the game and others of its type. (more…)

Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty (PC)

Would the definitive RTS game be welcomed on the 360 console?

So Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty has been out for a little while now and is proving to be immensely popular. But sadly this title is only being enjoyed by the happy millions of PC gamers out there, while us console gamers are stuck with playing shooter games like Halo: Reach or Medal of Honor.

There are many of us that would like to see a Real Time Strategy (RTS) successor to the successful Halo Wars which proved RTS can work on a console.

Is Starcraft 2 something the Xbox 360 owners should have had?

If only it was on consoles . . .

Game Success or Failure: Should Developers Stick To What They Know?

Game Success or Failure

Should developers stick to what they know ?

A change is as good as a holiday, they say.  People get tired of doing the same thing over and over so it shouldn’t be a surprise that game studios may feel the same way too.  In an industry plagued with safe sequels and cliche copycats it should be a good thing when a game studio decides to try something moderately or even completely new.  Unfortunately, this isn’t always so and what results can be average, or worse, a complete disaster.

ubi-1With the news that Ubisoft acquired Massive Entertainment, the game studio responsible for the successful RTS (Real Time Strategy) World In Conflict series, it surprised many to hear medium_world_in_conflict_logo_big2that the studio will not be working on a strategy game but a ‘fresh’ MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game.  Depending on what form this game takes it still seems like an unusual ask for a developer used to a very specific genre.

In the past there has been some some evidence that changes from established genres or franchises have not worked terribly well.

Success & Failure after the jump . . .
