A ‘visceral’ stomp?

dead space 3 3It seems that during the course of gaming, various trends come and go, much like everything nowadays.

Whether they are visual styles, aesthetics, themes, mechanics or gameplay styles, many publishers attempt to incorporate these current trends into their games and franchises, with mixed results.

The Darkness II altered its visual style from a realistic to cell-shaded effect, reminiscent of the game’s comic origins.

Splinter Cell: Conviction ditched its primary focus on stealth and silence, opting to turn to a more “Bourne-like” action theme.

dead space 3 screenshots oxcgn #1The Fallout series was originally a top-down RPG, however Bethesda mixed things up in Fallout 3 by utilising a first person perspective, used in titles such as Oblivion, and later Skyrim.

Some hit the jackpot, while others damage their franchises by incorporating something which feels seemingly out-of-place.

Dead Space 3 is no different.

crysis-3-oxcgn-screenshot 1February seems to be a huge month for EA, with the release of Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3, both the final installments in their respective trilogies, and both drastically changing the direction of the series.

Where one game moves away from the slow and horrific corridors of space to appeal to a broader audience, the other tries to combine the better features of the previous installments to please its fans.

dead space 3 3Dead Space 3 had our previewer impressed with the clever combination of heart-pounding action mixed into the familiar cold sweat inducing survival horror sections.

He then was then blown away by the well implemented new co-op element.

The co-op experience is a separate one from playing the game on your own, with each character doing separate tasks, including one of you playing in a hallucination mode, while the other protects you.

You can read his assessment here.

We’ll have to wait for our final play-though for the review to finally decide, but in the meantime it’s time to once again reward the readers for supporting us so well!

Dead_Space_3_boxart_oxcgnDead Space 3 is still the same Dead Space we know and love, albeit with the inclusion of auto and semi-automatic weapon wielding Unitologist soldiers and Necromorphs.

Yes, the game now features a very basic cover system, and various intense action pieces which are fleshed out through the game dependent on the story.

These have not been included for the sake of including them because Visceral and EA wish to ruin the Dead Space franchise, but instead as producer on Dead Space 3 John Calhoun puts it in our interview which you can read here:

Other things like weapon crafting and other features, these are just ways of innovating and making sure that Dead Space isn’t stale. When people buy this game, we want them to make sure they get a good value. There’s a lot that’s new and everything that you love is still intact.

After playing through the first three hours of the title, the game still retains the same basic functions that made Dead Space such a great new IP when it was released in 2008. What do you think?

Some people said, no I just couldn’t take it, it’s unrelenting, it was gory, it was just too much.

dead space 3 oxcgn screenshot. 5jpgEA Australia recently held a hands-on with Dead Space 3 and allowed journalists to get stomping with roughly the first 2-3 hours of the game.

Whilst it was an extremely intense session in a chilly room decked out with a fake-white snow carpet I had the chance to speak with John Calhoun producer on Dead Space 3.

In the 13 minute interview I got a better understanding of a developers point of view regarding backlash from consumers regarding the game’s change of direction and a delved a little deeper in the thought process of including certain features in the 3rd installment of this popular franchise.

Freezing never felt so good

This is probably a sentence that you’ll be thinking to yourself over and over again when you get a chance to play the Dead Space 3 demo. Or, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be screaming it at the TV in a mad panic just trying to stay alive yourself.

The demo gives you two options to whet your appetite before the 7th of February when the game is actually released.

You can go at it alone and give the single player a try, or play the same section of the game with a buddy – or in my case, some random stranger on Xbox Live.

OXCGN gets another look

dead space 3 oxcgn screenshot. 5jpgLet’s go back to mid-last year, back to June when E3 was well under way and OXCGN writers were participating in an EA Booth tour. We had the chance to watch a very action oriented hands-off demo gameplay walkthrough of Dead Space 3.

It didn’t really interest me due to the fact that it was mostly run and gun with a lot happening on the screen, and to me it wasn’t the Dead Space I had come to love. It was all about Unitologist soldiers along with Necromorphs firing automatic weapons back at Isaac.

The need to take cover behind crates to hide from enemy fire only to emerge at the right moment to take a shot, well, the market is flooded with this type of stuff already. The last thing I wanted to see was the same gameplay I’ve seen countless times in various other franchises especially from a game that had been such a good survival horror game.

Dead-Space-3-oxcgn_screenshot 26_shipFast forward to today and Visceral are starting to showcase more of what I want, survival horror where I’m required to creep down a corridor with my plasma cutter always drawn in case a Necromorph bursts out of the ceiling vent above, in an attempt to tear me to shreds.

Where I must scavenge dead bodies or crates in hope of finding ammo or health packs. Where I have to manage my ammo and ensure I don’t consume too much because the next area is becoming increasingly difficult.

ea logo oxcgnIt’s astounding to think that all the games at EA Australia’s Showcase will be released in Q1 of 2013. These range from the beautiful title Crysis 3, to Insomniac‘s first multiplatform title and new IP known as FUSE.

The line up is disappointingly filled with shooters, which I have to admit is starting to make this last stretch of current generation consoles over-crowded. With that being said though, EA do have Maxis‘s SimCity, my highlight of the showcase.

With FUSE and Dead Space 3 being the bigger titles of the line up, we’ve decided to bring back the snapshot format OXCGN utilized during previous events of this year.

This way, you’re able to digest more important information that we feel would interest you.
