E3 2010 Publisher Recap #2: Activision

by AXIS_of_Reality

Onto #2 of our publisher recaps, having a look at each of the games Activision was showing.

This is a discussion of our impressions and thoughts on the games instead of specs or features lists, as we know how difficult it can be to gauge exactly how good or shaky a game is looking at E3 amongst the marketing talk.

This only discusses the games we either played, or went behind closed doors for a media session. Luckily this covers almost all significant Xbox 360 games.

Once again, the game we felt most positive about from each publisher receives the OXCGN Green Light award.

So into Activision’s line up . . .

OXCGN’s E3 2010 Show Awards

The Awards no one else gives out.

One thing we noticed as we wandered around the main halls in E3 was the large number of stickers, plaques and awards attached to the signs for many games, proclaiming them as being ‘IGN Best Action Game Nominee’ or ‘Kotaku Best of E3′. Predictably these were fixed on the biggest sequels or most elaborate setups.

It got us thinking however: why do we have to stick to the traditional Academy Award-esque categories? Why not honour the less obvious achievements overlooked in the chaos of the show floor?

Gaming And E3′s Celebrities – No Such Thing As A Game Celebrity?

Why is there no such thing as a game celebrity?

by AXIS of Reality

We all know game development is one of the most overlooked creative industries. While you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who didn’t know the names James Cameron or Beyonce Knowles, mention Peter Molyneux or Shigeru Miyamoto to any non-gamer and you’ll be met with blank stares.

E3 is just around the corner, and the halls in LA’s Exhibition Centre will be filled with many of gamings best. But why do they not attain the level of success other mediums do, especially considering that their games can bring in twice as much revenue than some block-buster movies?

Try taking the gaming celebrity quiz at the end of this article, and see how well you know your favourite hobby.

But why is this so?

We all know the games industry is one of the most widely spread forms of media in the world, with Mario, Sonic, Halo and God of War recognisable to even the most technologically illiterate. This is much like films, but with the difference being most people can name Peter Jackson alongside Lord of the Rings or Keanu Reeves with The Matrix.

So just who are our gaming celebrities . . . ?

OXCGN’s Top 10 E3 Sequel Announcement Wish-List

Ten Games we would like to be announced at E3 2010.

There are strong arguments for wanting more original games (new IPs), but when you’ve got a good thing it’s natural to want more. With only a month and a half left until E3 (which OXCGN will be attending of course) I thought I’d put together my own list of most-wanted sequel announcements.

Note that this does not contain any sequels that have already been confirmed. I’ve also left out sequels to games that have been released in the last 6 months, as a sequel announcement of these would probably be undesirable and indicative of super-short development times.

So here we are, starting at number 10:
