A ‘visceral’ stomp?

dead space 3 3It seems that during the course of gaming, various trends come and go, much like everything nowadays.

Whether they are visual styles, aesthetics, themes, mechanics or gameplay styles, many publishers attempt to incorporate these current trends into their games and franchises, with mixed results.

The Darkness II altered its visual style from a realistic to cell-shaded effect, reminiscent of the game’s comic origins.

Splinter Cell: Conviction ditched its primary focus on stealth and silence, opting to turn to a more “Bourne-like” action theme.

Some hit the jackpot, while others damage their franchises by incorporating something which feels seemingly out-of-place.

Dead Space 3 is no different.

Top 5 Ingredients For The Ultimate Action RPG

Top 5 Ingredients For The Ultimate Action RPG

Which essentials would make the perfect game?

It’s no surprise to anyone that the Action/Adventure RPG genre is a popular choice for gamers. We have been spoiled for choice over the years with some high quality titles, which has allowed gamers to waste away their time holed up in front of a screen instead of experiencing that overrated thing called “outside”.

The Action/Adventure RPG allows gamers to experience various game worlds, richly detailed, full of life and character. They cater to the players’ game styles, allowing them to create a unique character or choose specific abilities with which to play through the game. The Action/Adventure RPG grants the player a sense of representation in the unique game world.

The following are 5 essentials that I believe the Ultimate Action/Adventure RPG must have, along with an example of a game that goes about it the right way.

Dead in the Dust?

After more than five years in production – including a change in developers in 2010 – the latest post-apocalyptic game has staggered onto the 360 with little fanfare.

Originally slated for retail release, takeover developers Ubisoft Shanghai made the bold decision in 2011 to downscale, making it an XBLA release only.

Weighing in at a hefty 1.7 gigabytes, I Am Alive is far from bite-sized; and it’s a reasonably meaty single-player experience, although its jarring introduction fails to impress.

id Returns With Unrivaled Intensity

id Software is a name in this industry that will never fade.

Considering that id’s Technical Director (because he’s too awesome to hold one single title for a long period of time) John Carmack pioneered three-dimensional gaming with Wolfenstein 3D, and later went on to create DOOM and Quake, it’s hard to ignore id’s pedigree and contributions.

It’s been seven long years since DOOM 3 rocked our lives [with its black screens], and id is back in their typical style with RAGE.

The ‘classic’ FPS meets the modern age. The enemies terrify me to my very core.

id has returned with their standard of unrivaled intensity.

Will this game inspire joy or RAGE? here
