OXCGN’s Gears of War: Judgment Review

Hordeless, but still distinctly Gears

gears_of_war_judgment_oxcgn_boxartI’ll start this review by saying four very sad words, ‘Rest in Peace Horde’.

The first thing I noticed when I put Gears of War Judgment in was that lack of horde mode. This meant two things for me – firstly, the game was going to have to be that much better to impress me, and secondly, I was delayed starting the campaign by a few minutes because I had to wait for the tears to dry so I could see again.

Once the initial shock had passed though, I decided that I would give the game a fair chance, with or without my favourite part of its predecessor. I started with the campaign.

FUSE_oxcgn_packshotOne of the more anticipated titles of EA’s Q1 2013 lineup is FUSE, Insomniac’s first foray into multi-platform gaming and a brand new IP.

FUSE, formerly known as Overstrike, has come a long way since its inception and with its unique take on co-op gameplay and weapon enhancements, it looks at making a name for itself to clearly stand out from the crowd.

If a single player campaign isn’t what you’re interested in, FUSE has an in-depth cooperative mode that is heavily dependent on teamwork that can make or break your success.

While it may resemble the likes of other cover-based third person shooter Gears of War, it is anything but.

Breaking new ground?

black_ops2_oxcgn headerOnline gaming would be a whole lot different today if it wasn’t for games like Call of Duty.

They made it easy to get involved, and it’s more addictive than ever – it’s not uncommon to see people with over twenty days of online play under their belt.

In order to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of online gaming, however, franchises like COD now have a yearly release.

Some people like myself love this, while others hate it. Either way, it’s probably going to be a few years before this cycle stops, so you better get used to it.

This year’s installment in the franchise, Black Ops 2, is a follow up to 2010’s Black Ops by Treyarch.

I have already reviewed the single player component of the game in a separate article – this review is strictly related to the multiplayer.

It’s no secret that I preferred Blacks Ops’ multiplayer compared to Modern Warfare 3, but when it came it single player, Black Ops did not even come close – let’s see how this year’s multiplayer iteration holds up.

In today’s day and age, games that are based on an established franchise need to tread carefully.

If the source material isn’t treated with respect, long-time fans will no doubt flame developers whilst wearing their rose-tinted glasses.

Thankfully, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will please any fans of the original Transformers series, as well as newcomers alike.
