Is The Arena Shooter Dead?

The Arena Shooter

Is it dead?

Part of progression is the simple act of moving on.

We live in a day and age where the past is continually being dwelled upon (see: the influx of HD re-releases), and we’re about to jump into the next cycle of video game technology with the imminent next generation of consoles and engines.

Something that constantly irks me, though, is of how one particular type of game seems to be breathing its last weak sighs; the arena shooter.

The modern mentality coupled with “everyone else is doing it” has led the Call of Duty franchise to momentous heights, and in my opinion, it’s hammering the final nail into the coffin of one of gaming’s most cherished pastimes.

And Its Unfortunate Death

If you can believe such a thing, there was a CoD before Modern Warfare!

One thing that has particularly caused the grinding of my gears over the past few years is how Call of Duty has become milked, mainstream garbage rehashed every year with .5% better visuals and two new weapons. On top of that, each one sells better than the last!

Don’t get me wrong: you’re entitled to play whatever you like, and have fun with it.

I don’t strongly dislike Call of Duty for the fact that it’s popular, because then that would classify me as an angry hipster.

I dislike Call of Duty because it killed the last good thing the industry still had up its sleeve: what I’ll call ‘classic multiplayer’. (more…)

After eagerly awaiting the new map packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and being sorely disappointed both times I am please to say that this is not the case with the First Strike DLC for Black Ops.

The Map pack consists of 4 new multiplayer maps and 1 Zombie mode map. Not being a huge Zombie mode player I will get to that last and will list the other maps in order from my least favourite to my favourite.

So does it stack up . . . ?

Halo Reach is both is both a joy and a burden.

Obviously a new Halo game is a reason to celebrate, with the core Halo games consistently maintaining a benchmark level of quality shared by few.

However, there is a downside for me. The more Halo games we get, the harder they become to review.

Should I be taking it from a Halo virgin’s perspective, or an experienced player?

Should it be compared with the previous games, or viewed alone?

Is more of the same a good or bad thing?

Does multiplayer outweigh the campaign, or vice versa?

Well I’ve chosen a compromise. Individually reviewed and scored within this article are the following:

  • Halo Reach Campaign

  • Halo Reach Multiplayer

  • New Halo-Player Experience

  • Veteran Halo-Player Experience

As each player is going into Halo Reach looking for something different I don’t feel an overall rating for Halo Reach can be justified. An ultimate rating would not reflect the experience of a multiplayer gamer uninterested in the campaign, for example.

With that out of the way, it’s time to kick off the Reach-a-thon with: Let’s get on with it shall we . . .
