id Returns With Unrivaled Intensity

id Software is a name in this industry that will never fade.

Considering that id’s Technical Director (because he’s too awesome to hold one single title for a long period of time) John Carmack pioneered three-dimensional gaming with Wolfenstein 3D, and later went on to create DOOM and Quake, it’s hard to ignore id’s pedigree and contributions.

It’s been seven long years since DOOM 3 rocked our lives [with its black screens], and id is back in their typical style with RAGE.

The ‘classic’ FPS meets the modern age. The enemies terrify me to my very core.

id has returned with their standard of unrivaled intensity.

Will this game inspire joy or RAGE? here

Taking The Lan Out of Lan Party

QuakeCon 2011 concluded just over a week ago, and it was definitely one of the better years in the history of the event.

RAGE could be experienced by nearly anyone, swag was generous, panels were at their best, and the BYOC was easily the best in years.

AT&T pulled through this year, offering excellent internet connectivity and over five times the bandwidth of previous years.

No longer was anyone screwed because they didn’t configure Steam properly; the internet peaked at 8+ MB download speeds.

Unfortunately, nothing is without drawbacks; the result of this was that LAN networking was restricted to anyone on the same network switch as yourself, which means you could only play LAN games with the people at your table.

This was a very successful method of circumventing file sharing programs such as the infamous DC++.

The internet may be good, but this was an absolute disappointment. It’s taking the LAN out of LAN party. (more…)

QuakeCon 2011 has come and gone, and I’m still recuperating.

Hauling two rigs on a small cart for at least half of a mile does not go well with your arms and shoulders, especially when you have to go up three tiny yet momentous stairs.

In the first days of the event, I was darting around as Press; one event within that series was a behind-closed-doors press appointment (even though the doors were very open) for id Software‘s RAGE, their first title in seven years.

Thanks to the kind folks at Bethesda, there is no embargo on what I experienced; what you’ll see here is only the honest, realistic truth regarding what id Software has been working on. Is it worth the wait?

The world only makes sense with the aid of delicious Bawls in your mouth

My vision is blurred; my body sleep deprived; my computer full of stickers I never even noticed before; my voice completely lost. Another year, another QuakeCon has come and gone.

Saturdays and Sundays of  the event are typically very low-key, and as a result, we’ve combined both days into one final wrap-up.

OXCGN’s first year on-site at QuakeCon was a great one, and we’re aiming to continue being there in years to come.

Read on to see what happened in the final hours of QuakeCon 2011!

How did it all ‘wrap up’ ? . . . find out more . . .
