An All Digital Future

Is it a communist one?

It is my God-given right as an American to detect any hint of subversion to our glorious capitalist way of life.

After the First World War, soldiers came back from harrowing, unheard of combat with new ideas on how things should work; thus the First Red Scare.

As history tends to repeat itself, after World War II, soldiers again came back to illustrious American soil, again, with ideas that were just a tad unconventional. With true revolutionaries such as Joseph McCarthy backing it, the Second Red Scare occurred and shook our nation to its very core.

Ladies and gents, we are at the dawn of the Third Red Scare. As the war in the Middle East is downsized, with all American troops ‘officially’ out of Iraq (we’re still the life of the party in Afghanistan, because our economy depends on it!) soldiers, again, are coming home with ideologies that may differ from what the average American believes.

What’s wrong with all-digital distribution – plenty…

Killzone isn’t “beautiful”: OXCGN’s Gamer Debate

Beauty or a beast?

We’ve had the ‘is Killzone 3 a game 360 owners would want to steal” discussion, but now we debate if the Killzone games can be considered truly ‘beautiful’ in the true sense of the word.

Can you see both sides?

So, let’s get started shall we….

David Hilton:

assassin's creed 2 screenshot oxcgn #2I know this will be controversial, but for the most part I wouldn’t characterise the last two Killzone’s visuals as beautiful. Polished, yes. Good games? Sure. But beautiful, using the truest sense of the word? No.

I see and hear words like ‘beautiful’ or ‘gorgeous’ in reviews but to me it looks like yet more empty destroyed non-descript buildings. How you can call that sort of post-apocalyptic environment ‘beautiful’ is beyond me. It fits the game, but isn’t attractive.

So what do YOU call ‘beautiful’ . . . ?

Was Killzone 3 over-hyped? Nick & Alex discuss the pros-n-cons.

ED: We love other platform exclusives- especially those of us lucky enough to own the other platforms.  However we know there are those who prefer to keep to their 360, so we often ask if a big exclusive would have been great on the 360.

Not if it is realistic or not that the game would appear on it…just if 360 owners would have liked to ‘steal’ it.

This time though we have two staff members take a look and debate the worth of Killzone 3 on PS3.  It is often touted as the best exclusive shooter franchise on Sony’s platform- but is it more hype than reality?  Read the animated discussion below.

Speaking of Killzone and debates, this week we will also feature a gamer debate between myself and Nicholas: Be it resolved that Killzone isn’t ‘beautiful’.

Check back and see if you agree.

Well, Alex, we’re not even started and I think this will be quite a heated debate!

Alex Baldwin

Probably. Since Killzone 3′s release I’ve seen so many conflicting opinions around it, but I guess that’s just the fate of platform-exclusive games

NL:

Always. But now for OUR special review! May the best [American] man win, sir.

AB:

…………..sure.

But before we begin, I have a confession.

NL:

And what is that, Mr. Baldwin?

AB:

I wrote OXCGN’s review for Killzone 2, giving it a healthy 9.2/10 in the old rating system. Being quite honest, I think I would actually lower that a bit in hindsight

And so, let the debate begin . . .

Game Sequels Vs Original Comparative Round-Up Pt 2

Is a sequel really better – or worse than the original?

It has been a few months since the first few comparisons that we did in Part 1,  so it is once again time to compare a few sequels and their respective predecessors – some new and some not so new.

As previously discussed, games do have it a little easier than films in that they can rely on game play to make a game better, not simply the characters and plot line.

If a game’s plot and characters are weak, it is still possible for it to be a successful and even good game – if the plot and characters in a film are no good, so is the film.

For me, characters are my favourite part of any story and this might help explain some of the choices below.

What games are under the microscope . . .
