OXCGN’s Spec Ops: The Line Review

OXCGN’s Spec Ops: The Line Review

A Revolution in Gaming Narrative

by Chris Fox

Ever since I heard that Spec Ops: The Line was a war game with a heavy focus on narrative I have been incredibly eager to play it.

Does Spec Ops live up to the promise of a game with a truly rich and engulfing story or do we have yet another generic war shooter on our hands?

To find out, we must journey to Dubai with Captain Walker and his team to see if Spec Ops walks the line or crosses it.

Spec Ops: The Line is a third person shooter (this already sets it apart from the likes of Call of Duty) and stars Nathan Dr- sorry, Nolan North, as Captain Walker.

Investigating the disappearance of Colonel Konrad, an old buddy of Walker, it is your job along with your compadres of combat Lugo and Adams to find the missing Colonel and find out exactly what has happened in the war torn, sand ravaged city of Dubai.

Does the new young Sam destroy his character?

Few game voice actors can say they have made a strong impact with their in-game character.

Jen Taylor as Cortana. Nolan North as Nathan Drake. David Hayter as Solid Snake. These are the exceptions.

Arguably one of the best that would appear on that list is Michael Ironside, the charismatic and legendary voice behind Splinter Cell‘s Sam Fisher.

Today, Ubisoft announced the next iteration in the franchise entitled Blacklist, and many warning signs blared in my head: little to no stealth was present, Sam looks young, the connection to Conviction was never explained (as it is obviously a sequel since Third Echelon is shut down)…

And one of the most appalling: Michael Ironside will not be returning as the voice of Sam.

E3 2011: The Darkness II: To Sequel or Not To Sequel?

E3 2011: To sequel or not to sequel?

Now this was one sequel that I was definitely excited about.

The first game was such a dark and visceral experience with excellent storytelling but went mostly unnoticed in the gaming industry.

But I wasn’t expecting it to be developed by another developer or it going the way of cell shading.

Sure games such as Crackdown offered great open world fun with its cell shading, and even last gen’s XIII was an awesome conspiracy FPS. Borderlands ended up turning out to being a great FPS with some quality comedic performances as it never took itself too seriously- but a violent game such as The Darkness where you can rip hearts out and chop head off ? Won’t it seem tame in its cell shaded glory?

Is the change worthnthe wait . . .
