A damn cold strategy game

company of heroes 2 screenshots oxcgn #6Back in 2007, Relic under THQ released a World War Two RTS called Company of Heroes.

It took a very different approach to real-time strategy.

Instead of focusing on building as many units as quickly as possible and then rushing, Company of Heroes‘ approach incorporated RPG elements and placed emphasis on strategic placement of units.

Now under the banner of Sega, Company of Heroes 2 is nearly here, and we’ve had extensive hands-on time with the closed beta.

After experiencing nearly eight hours of gameplay, I have come to a single conclusion: it’s a damn cold strategy game.

Is this the future of strategy?

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

The fastest thing alive

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed screenshots oxcgn #11Nearly three years ago an underrated little racer known as Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing was released to give 360 and PS3 owners their very own kart racer to break out at parties.

It featured a range of characters, tracks and music from the SEGA universe and while it was a lot of fun, it never quite reached the heights or acclaim of its peers.

While Alex Kidd may not be anywhere near as recognisable as Mario, the SEGA fan base are a hardcore, passionate bunch and they definitely deserve an excellent kart racer of their own.

It’s a good thing, therefore, that Sumo Digital have now delivered one. (more…)

Monkeying With The Formula

I love my Vita and I love excuses to play it even more, although sadly these are few and far between.

I’m also a huge fan of the first two Monkey Ball games that were found on Nintendo’s Gamecube ten years ago, but I haven’t been impressed with SEGA‘s offerings since then.

For those who don’t know, Monkey Ball is a simple yet addictive and challenging premise. To succeed, simply guide your balled monkey to collect bananas and reach the timed goal by tilting the world around him.

The original Monkey Ball became one of the Gamecube’s strongest launch titles with its fresh and unique blend of challenging single player levels and outstandingly fun multiplayer mini games.

But forget the past, it’s now 2012. Has Monkey Ball regained its former greatness?

The greatest seasons for new exciting video game trailers may be during the E3 week and the lead into the Christmas big release period,  but this year there have been an unusual number of very exciting quality trailers released just after E3.

Some have even been big budget live action trailers, which is interesting in itself, as these don’t actually show much, if any, gameplay and serve only to get us excited about the potential ‘vision’ of the game.

Here are my top post E3 trailers I’ve come across lately, with a poll at the bottom for you to vote for your favourite.  I will send the publisher the results, so get your friends voting!

These are in no particular order:
