OXCGN’s Mortal Kombat Review

A brutal return to the fighting genre

Whilst the movie is still far from being revived and though Kevin Tancharoen’s mini web series received less than stellar responses, Mortal Kombat has been brought back to its roots by Netherrealm Studios, the newly formed company under Ed Boon and Warner Bros (WB) replacing Midway.

With the earlier iteration titled Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, fans of the beloved franchise cried foul.

The game was nowhere near the same caliber as previous MK games, with stale game play and fatalities that were pretty lame and looked like regular combo moves.

That, however, has changed with Mortal Kombat under Netherrealm Studios. (more…)

The Mana Bar: cocktails and gaming a potent mix?

It this the best thing to happen to the Australian gaming scene – or what?

Adults play games too

If there is a heaven, and I’m not saying there isn’t, I think that it most certainly would have video games lining the walls in a bright and fantastic fashion.

Friendly and fun people would definitely be a requirement of this great beyond- no fools or rude people ruining all your fun, not to mention perhaps some fun cocktails to share with your new heaven-buddies.

Well, maybe heaven might or might not be like that, but the Mana Bar certainly is. It just opened last Saturday to the great appreciation of Brisbane’s gaming community.

Operating out of Fortitude Valley, which nestles in the heart of the Brisbane clubbing district, the Mana Bar is run by a variable smorgasbord of talent with the whole concept of the ‘Gamer Bar’ being blamed on the AustralianGamer co-owner turned bar owner, Yug, who on the night was found to be handing out prizes along the line to the waiting horde of adoring nerds (yes, I was in said line of adoring game nerds).

Hands-On With Lost Planet 2 & Super Street Fighter 4

We Have A Smashing Good Time

I’m not a massive fan of Street Fighter (Mortal Kombat is my preferred fighter) and Lost Planet 1 never really grabbed my attention to experience it as there were plenty of other great games out at the time of its release, so my initial expectations upon walking into the room which THQ had set up last week to profile their upcoming games, Lost Planet 2 , Super Street Fighter IV, MotoGP 2010 (all tested on PS3) and of course Metro 2033 (tested on Xbox360) down at their PR Managers rooms in the Sydney CBD was, to be honest, quite low.

April: All Quiet On The Gaming Front

Three of our staff, including our Editor In Chief, have a look at the month that passed in gaming and at OXCGN.

April’s seen little in the way of major releases, simply bridging the gap between the key game release months of February and June. Not that it’s been a problem – recently I’ve been revisiting old favourites as well as checking out some of the more unusual titles that hide on the back shelves of EB, usually behind a random EA Sports title or blocked from view by such ‘quality’ games as Imagine: Babies.

After store searching all over Brisbane I finally managed to track down a copy of one of my favourite games of the last generation: Jet Set Radio Future on Xbox. Despite replaying it 7 years later it has lost none of its charm and innovation, feeling more ‘next-gen’ than half the games being released right now. If anyone hasn’t experienced the amazing gameplay perfection of JSRF (or the original on Dreamcast, Jet Set Radio or Jet Grind Radio depending on where you live) you can find it cheap and it’s definitely worth it.

More after the hop . . .
