thief 4 screenshots oxcgn #8The gaming world collectively freaked out earlier this month when the fourth Thief title was announced after a very, very long wait.

Eidos Montreal, the talented team behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution, will be handling the game, and it couldn’t be in better hands.

Considering the age of the series (the first title, Thief: The Dark Project, released in 1998), I thought it was time to do a screenshot comparison to showcase the giant leaps in visual fidelity that the series has seen since its initial release many moons ago.

Below, you will find screenshots ordered from left to right, with the oldest ones on the left. The order is as follows: Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age on the first rows, and Thief: Deadly Shadows and Thief 4 beneath.

Note that Thief: Deadly Shadows and the newest Thief title do not have numbers in their titles, but I referred to them as 3 and 4 respectively for continuity.

See how Thief has aged!

We’re at the end of the longest console cycle in the history of the industry.

Most AAA releases consist of sequels in well-established franchises. Publishers are taking less risk.

And then there’s Dishonored.

Created by the masterminds at Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda, Dishonored can only be accurately described as a beautiful, evocative masterpiece.

It’s safe to say that Dishonored is one of the most unique titles releasing in 2012.

The best way of describing it would be the atmosphere, mood and tone of Thief, combined with everything that made the Deus Ex franchise great: a plethora of gameplay styles, and multiple approaches to every situation.

After unfortunately not having time to play it at E3, I had an opportunity to sit down with the PC version of the game for an entire hour at QuakeCon 2012, with the exceptional opportunity to interview Harvey Smith, co-creative director on the title, immediately after.

For now, we’ll focus on what I saw in my demo.

I slipped Santa’s body into the kitchen freezer. He was dead drunk before, now he was just dead. Santa’s suit gave me free access to the mansion’s rooms. Nobody would suspect that a drunken Santa was the assassin.

A sausage on the floor gave me an idea – I quickly injected the sedative into the oily meat. This would remove another rather noisy obstacle – the annoying noisy dog coming my way.

I casually joined the party mixing in with the other guests while looking around the room for my target. Ahh, there he was, just leaving, perfect. I followed him past the guards, then throwing the sausage in order to distract the dog, which was barking at my heels by then.

Is the ‘Stealth Genre’ dying ? . . .
