How Sony Now Listens, and Nintendo Still Doesn’t

How Sony Now Listens, and Nintendo Still Doesn’t

With Vita and 3DS XL We See The Difference

The portable console market is in a hard place.

No matter how much people want to dismiss gaming on smartphones, they have succeeded where portable gaming in the past has failed: they sell very cheap games, sometimes free, and provide casual quick gaming experiences that captivate hardcore and gaming noobs. In short, they have taken initiative and grabbed some of the gaming market and grown it.

That means portables need to find a way to keep their traditional market and somehow provide an experience that will attract others, beyond what smartphones do.

Sony have gone in the right direction with PS Vita, while Nintendo languishes in past glory days and gimmicks with the 3DS XL.

In other words: Sony has learned from past mistakes, and Nintendo hasn’t.

Come see an old man rave about Sony!

We at OXCGN love opinionated pieces.

As such, we are, for the most part, very opinionated people.

I got into a very heated debate (as usual) with our very own second-in-command, David Hilton; this time, over the candidacy of a new generation of consoles.

Many excellent points are made, and describing it would be as if the famous unstoppable force met the infamous immovable object.

Read on to see what our future may hold. (more…)

Evidence That Current Generation Consoles Are Horribly Outdated

Battlefield 3 is looking to be shooter of the year, and an all-time classic to set the precedent for what will be a very deciding decade of interactive entertainment.

As a gamer who owns all of the consoles and who builds (and loves) the PC platform, I can’t help but feel pity for those who will be playing the title on a console.

The PC version will run at true 1080p HD visuals, have support for 64-player multiplayer scenarios, and features unrestricted map size.

The console versions, on the other hand, will run at bare minimum-HD 720p, support a maximum of 24-player multiplayer, and have cut-down maps.

Let’s face it: this is clear, blatant evidence that the current generation of consoles are horribly outdated, and are hindering what gaming can aspire to ascertain. (more…)

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is just around the corner, and this is when anticipation starts to build.

  • Will that hinted-at project be unveiled?
  • Will that sequel get announced?
  • Will that exclusive title go multiplatform?
  • Will Valve finally speak of Half-Life 2: Episode Three?
  • Will Peter Molyneux claim his next title will cure cancer?
  • Will the next consoles be unveiled?
  • Will I have to sell my firstborn child to buy said consoles?

It’s quite simply the most wonderful time of the year in the gaming scene, and everyone is ecstatic. But with every E3, there always comes the great anticipations and excitements AND of course – the disappointments and let-downs. It’s a ‘given’ with any E3.

Unfortunately OXCGN won’t be attending this year (I’ll be in the trenches with you guys in 2012), but here are the top announcements we do and don’t want at E3 2011, in no particular order. (more…)
