What’s Next for Call of Duty?

The future examined

Call of Duty: Black OpsBack in 2011, just after Modern Warfare 3 had been released, I took a crack at what I thought would be the next Call of Duty game.

Well, it’s about that time of year again since they seem to do their announcements around April or May, so I thought I would give it another shot.

I came close last time (granted, I used the scatter gun approach by guessing several different options) but it might be a little trickier this time because the Modern Warfare franchise has come to an end (or has it?).

So, what are the options?

Modern Warfare 4(ish)

With that in mind, it is likely that Modern Warfare 4 will be the next Call of Duty game that we see. However, I don’t think that it will be a direct sequel; in fact, it probably won’t even be called Modern Warfare, but will be set in the same universe.

There are plenty of characters that they could use, including Price, Soap, Roach and Ghost.

Personally, I hope that they make a game centered around Ghost before his untimely demise. The problem here is that it would have to be long before the events of Modern Warfare, and let’s face it: the stakes will never be as big as they were in MW2 so it can’t possibly be as intense.

While I think this is the likely option, I really hope they leave the Modern Warfare franchise to rest in peace – and I say that as a massive fan.

Future(er)… or a step back?

Call_of_Duty_Black_Ops_2_oxcgnThe next option would be an Infinity Ward take on the future warfare setting. Black Ops 2 was set in both the future and the past, so it’s not impossible that we will see a game set entirely in the future. My best guess is that if this does happen, it would be much further in the future than Black Ops 2 is.

Think one hundred or so years where they would be able to make everything up entirely, and not base the technology on things that already exist like they did for Black Ops 2. This would open it up a whole lot, but the problem is that it might change the series too much and make it unrecognisable.

I made the prediction last time that a space warfare game could be an option. Well, I don’t think that will ever happen with Call of Duty, to be honest, but there might be a mission or two that take place on space stations, or something like that. A game set in the far future would make this much more likely.

Please, no aliens though… leave those for other games to deal with.

Then of course there is the possibility of going back in time. There’s plenty left to explore from the past, from World War Two, The Korean War, and many many others.

Frankly, I can say that I am almost certain that this will not happen. People need to feel like they are moving forward, and I think the idea of going back to using old school weaponry will turn a lot of people off. I know I personally don’t want it.

The only way that this would actually work is if they create a fictional past, and take some liberties with the weapons and vehicles. I don’t think I’m okay with this option, though; to be honest, I would rather they made up a fictional future rather than a fictional past.

Other possiblities

call of duty police warfare oxcgn #2One of the cornerstones of the Call of Duty series is that you’re pretty much always saving the world, and if you fail, all will be lost and everyone will die.

With that mindset, it’s difficult to see them changing up the formula and giving us anything other than a military shooter focusing on special ops teams. I can hear you thinking, “Duh, of course they won’t!” but let me clarify what I mean.

There was some speculation a while back that there was going to be a police type Call of Duty, where you would be part of a SWAT team or something like that, but I don’t think this will ever happen because the stakes just aren’t high enough. [Ed.: This was actually a concept for a new franchise which Activision did not response to; it was then a Kickstarter game that failed to reach its goal. So, it’s safe to say that this type of idea doesn’t have enough of an audience.]

Whatever they do, I can tell you this for certain: you will be saving the world… again. My best guess is that it will have something to do with the Modern Warfare series, but won’t be a direct sequel.

One way or another, I think it will be the start of a new franchise for the new generation of consoles.

What are you thoughts? Let us know what you think will be the next Call of Duty game, or what you would like to see in the next game, both in single and multi player.
